Hey Kicha, welcome! Great start. I hope to see some more recent work soon to judge your learning curve properly. I think the girls waist is too thin and that her physical weaight isn’t distributed evenly. Hope to see more!
hey HA-DOU-KEN!thanks for the corrections and suggestions, and here i post my first head,“water”,i have tried to do it ,but dont know how far i have succeeded in it,anyway here it is for the critics and comments and corrections and suggestions, and one morething,i dont know how to do shading, and most important is i dont know how to use a charcoal pencil(because i have seen u people doing magic with charcoals),i am waiting for the reply…

Hai Richa,
yeah ,our names really seems to be fun,and thanx for your comments ,but so sad that you didn’t criticize that head ,i dont know where, but know that there are many mistakes in that head drawing ,if you people point out them ,i will try to do the corrections ,and improve my art na ,so i always wait for the critics, but thanx for visiting and commenting this newbie’s thread.and about me ,i had interest in art from my childhood .i had a dream of doing BFA,but due to some reasons i had to go with BSc,CHEM.i finished that and was made to do my one year diploma in 3D animation ,i went to a job ,but left it now ,and i want to do my BFA now,i have enough money to di it now,so thats all about me,and since i am also a fan of “Michaelangelo”,interest in learning anatomy is common.i want to take sculpture in BFA degree as my specialization.i think i have written too much, sorry…waiting for the critics…kicha…
Hai Anandpg,
i am a great fan of your work, how can u do those, everynight i watch your thread and then sleep,it inspires me a lot,and the most important thing is those words written down at the end of ur post from THE AGONY AND THE ECSTACY ,they are magical words which can increase the fire inside the mind of every artist, the lines have some strength!
and moreover i also want learn sculpting ,i do some works at home using the children’s clay,i want u to give some tips for sculpting also,
waitng for ur reply,kicha…
Ok, I looked up the ref for that 1st head from the challenge again. Here’s what comes to mind:
- you’ve drawn the nose in the center of the face, while the head is at a slight angle and should be moved slightly to (our) right side. Draw an imaginary line from the nose to her left over the left cheek until it ends. Then do the same for the other side… Check these proportions on the original ref and you’ll see a difference.
- the eyes seem too big, actually, the facial features should be pushed a bit to the right (left side of her face) so there is a tad more space between her right eye and her right ear. but the space between the 2 eyes should equal the size of one eye. So I’d suggest making the eyes less “wide” and make the space between them bigger.
- the hairline should be a bit higher
4.the drawing needs a lot more contrast. try to use the shading to create more volume. Her right side of the nose is almost completely black - the upper lip M is a bit over-emphasised in your drawing.
Well that’s it. Gotta go… boss seems to be in a bad mood (at work)… hope this helps
THANK YOU VERY MUCH NR43,
you have spared your time to point out the mistakes and also you have given the suggestions to rectify them. The way u have pointed out really helps me to study the head again ,and i will post the second try .I will try to improve my shading part also. And one more thing ,should not i practice the skull before getting in to head drawing, because i directly went to the skin without the knowledge of inner structure,i think thats also a reason for my delay,so i want u to help me on this also
waiting fo the reply,
kicha…
Oh itz really a good decision to go for BFA…bt jus curious why to go for degree?..why not to dedicate some learning time under an artist?..or may be the college you plan to join really offers good traning?!!
Best wishes for wtevr u ve chosen!..
The most imp thing now ‘crits’ :): somehow i really appreciate the effort a student puts in the work being a reason you will seldomly see criticizin me any work…*OMG i rmbr my students telin me how ruthlessly i criticize their work:scream: *
since you really wish to do corrections and improvements…hope you draw basic shapes before going ahead with your drawing?..that will correct the proportions and perspective in your drawing!..Well here m finding neck and eyes too big compared to ref…need correction in eyebrows and hair…but the major work is required in understandin values while shading…the contour of head and neck appears at same level flat area coz of missing dark cast shadow on neck…
I do realiZe you must have gone thru anatomy thread here…but i would like to share with you that i constantly observe Sketchbook of AztcFireflower_Figurative ‘n’ other Stuff for study of shading with values and Sketchbook Thread of zhuzhu
Oh i must keep it short there are so many great artists around to observe and learn from:buttrock:
Plz post some more work…
So much more in mind…but thatz it for now:)
Hey kicha
it would definetely help to learn about the skull and the muscles.
Do you have any books on anatomy?
I’m going through “Drawing the human head” by Burne Hogarth lately… really taking my time for it to study what he describes… especially the first half of the book, covering the basics… drawing those pages over and over again really helps getting the proportions better. You can find the book quite cheap on amazon.
If you don’t like Hogarth or are not able to find it where you live, I can suggest Andrew Loomis’ books, but they are even harder to find.
Check out your local library and see what you can find there if you cannot afford to buy books at the moment. Or you might have a great 2nd hand bookstore in your town, which can be full of interesting surprizes as well
I really think a book covering the basics on drawing heads helps a lot.
I would also suggest to do a couple heads from the first anatomy challenge at a quick pace. Drawing basic line drawings (see my sketchbook thread, I’ve done loads from the challenge and at school as well). Personally, I think it’s important to be able to indicate convincing proportions with just lines. Even now, when I’m painting on pc, I use a basic line sketch when I’m stuck. So the lines help me when I’m in trouble. The more we draw, the less we will have to rely on lines I think.
I hope I’m not overwhelming you too much with all this. If I am, sorry!
Really looking forward to see the 2nd version of that head!
