Anatomy Thread of DDS - 3D

#1

Hey guys!

Since I’m a big fan of doing characters, I need to study the anatomy muuuuch more.

1st image is based on some statue photo I did while in Rome last year…picture quality was bad because Vaticaan museums has some dark rooms, (and obviously no flash allowed) so basically I aimed for the pose, and didn’t spend time on details. Also never worked with Zspheres and it was a pain in the ass, next time will be better I hope.

Welcome to the forums! Haven’t seen you for awhile.

Some beginning crits, the lower legs are too long and the biceps need to be longer. The head seems small, but this is a trait of a lot of statues to make them seem more epic I think. Your going to have to either take pictures of yourself doing this or someone else since its going to be tricky to give the sculpture the illusion of weight. He’s just floating on the ground right now, there is no muscle tension in the lower legs.

DDS,

Great to see you starting up a Sketchbook! Really like the model you did, I think of your mom, that’s really impressive. I’m assuming you’re looking forward to the ZBrush 3 update - there are some great Zbrushers around here, check out the threads of Intervain, claybub, anandpg, Thomasphoenix, plunq and others, as well as the general 3D threads of Zapan, Gunilla, and others. Some great stuff going on here, looking forward to seeing your progress!

I’m no modeling expert, but just from an aesthetic point of view, the area that seems to need more attention is the area of the ankles / feet. The back of the lower leg / achilles area looks a bit flat, but I know this is a WIP stage and things change rapidly. Looking forward to seeing updates!

Cheers,

Hi…Albert…

Great to see someone else in here, who is just starting to explore those z sphere’s,…I was beginning to think that I was the only one around here who was thinking that those z sphere’s although nice, are a real pain to work with in a natural way …Hopefully the new version of the Z BRUSH program will ease the pain and frustration that is curently a big factor of that program, …we will see shortly…I guess…
The only small crit on your sculpture that I can comment on at the moment, …is maybe to exagerate those opposing curves throughout the figure, to give it an enhanced sense of RYTHUM, FLOW, ENERGY, LIFE, and STRENGTH…
Anyway,…looking forward to seeing more of your work…KEEP POSTING…
TAKE CARE
Glenn

#6

Waiting for updates:bounce:

#7

Hey Albert! found your thread, finally!!:bounce: Great work, mate!! Nothing much to add to the above critiques… Just a little query about the left hand… looks like he is holding something… are you gonna model a prop for him to hold? Also a bit worried about the size of both hands. keep up the good work!

#8

hey guys!

thanks for the encouragement. I agree with all of you. Definitely will work more on that on my upcoming dozens, hundreds or hopefully thousands of 3D sketches. I’ll leave that one for now, since it was just a quick practice (4-5h) even Zspheres were slowing the hell out of it.

Right now I’m posting one that I spent some more time, like 6 hours so far, but I’m not done yet. I’m very pissed in how zspheres leave my mesh and how Zbrush doesn’t save my poly groups when importing changed meshes from max (so I can’t change them). Any tips? I’m really waiting for ZB3, this is a nightmare haha. Symmetry rulez!

Please keep your crits coming! Her arms tomorrow (damn zspheres!! I would be done by now :().

CGicecube so finally I get my Indian clay? yes? I’m in awe!! u said 50kg…?..

#9

These are quick practices!??! It takes me like 5 hours more just to get to half that level I think.

Nice sculptures you have here. Have you tried mudbox? Maybe you’ll like it more than zbrush  But I see people who have tried zbrush 3 (the beta version) seem to like it a very lot (more than mudbox?). Well, dunno, I’m not much of a 3d artist, though I’ve spent quite some time pulling polygons and am planning in creating a 3d character some time soon. Will have a whole lot of stuff to learn!
Oh, as a guy, I couldn’t have unoticed, the girl has nice gluteus maximus

#11

Hey Albert! I dont use 3DSMax, so I am a bit confused… by polygroups, do you mean something like vertex numbering? or is it about UVs? I will tell u something that happened to me with Maya… I wanted to change the pose of a sculpture i was doing, so I exported it from ZBrush at subdivision level 0. … imported to maya, changed pose and exported… then when I imported to ZBrush, the mesh went hay-wire at higher levels because the vertex numbering was different. I first thought ZBrush was causing the problem while importing or exporting, but later found that Maya was re-assigning vertex numbers while importing! so I had to turn off that option while importing my low-res to maya… and everything worked just fine! Hope this relates in some way to your problem. btw, nice model! …and like Razz said, nice Glutius Maximus, too… hehehe!!

#12

I like her back in particular! really sumptuous looking…

I think you need to pay more attention to feet on your models - both of them seem to have really crooked toes :scream: - some work on those in addition to the other parts of the models would be only fair since we always look at a person from the feet up and not the other way round  Good job though for such a short time

about polygroups - there really shouldn’t be a problem with those as long as the vertex count remains unchanged… well you’ll be able to repose easily in Z3 so no need to export the mesh :scream: - believe you me, it’s a blessing…

#13

Well about feet…they seem odd to me in both the 3D sketches…but i bet itz because you have not worked on it yet…now allow me to praise torso:thumbsup:

And about clay…com’on i cant carry 50 kg…so please adjust with only a kg for now…You know i will bring more soon:)

P.S.: Many congrats for winning Dominance War:love:

#14

Hey, I came across your Dominance War entry earlier but now can’t find it. Do you have a link? It looked awesome!

#15

dang I swear I replied here yesterday!

Well I was saying thanks to everyone, and I agree with the toe crits. But being sketch I think I can skip such tricky parts because I really think they make me invest so much time that only for that my quickies end up being too much.

I’m not working on 3D anymore guys. Not until the 15th. It’s just ridiculous what you can do in ZB3, I don’t wanna waste my time in v2, I feel silly and I also feel like my work is pointless!!! (mostly for the zspheres). But I got a license so I’ll get my free upgrade in 2-3 days

Now I’m doing some clay practice thanks to Richa that supplied it, but I’ll post maybe tomorrow, maybe never! lol (hopefully the 1st).

Rebbeka thanks! you can check my entry here

#16

Excuses! Although I probably won’t be able to do much on the 15th anyway since I have an animation to render!

#17

excuses…mmmh…well that’s true. I didn’t say the real reason why i’m not doing shit. Me and my mate are playing WoW! Great! I said it, yuhuuuu. ZB3 will rule over it though, my expectations, right now, are over anything else!!!

Pixoooo…logic don’t make me sad

#18

oh they won’t  - it rules the universe! … sidenote: I’ll never get the WoW thing I guess…

#19

hey, after some time I get to post something. I’ve been very busy with work and also a little lazy (obviously recovering from long hours of work…:P) so the update is not much.

I’ve been messing with ZB3 and made this head, its still WIP like everything else. It took a while since I was practicing with all the new tools. Then today I spent 1 or 2 hours roughing out the body. I hide hands and feet since they aren’t even at that level.

BTW she will be dressed with some outfit I have a couple sketches for.

#20

WOW, Albert!! Thats some awesome stuff on her head!!:bounce: Did you make it in ZB from scratch with the new “extract” thingy or did you bring it over from Maya/Max/XSi(etc.)? Btw, her back and lower body look really nice, while the shoulder/chest area could use some work. How do you plan to join the head to the body?
