Ouch. Head 4 is a try at reference 057… done in 50 minutes.
I have to pay more attention to what I’m doing…

Oh my god people , great work everyone…

Ok here i come again to break the great 2D stuff around with another 3d quickie. The last was on poligon modeling didn’t end up very well… well i think Max isn’t the most indicated workflow for this kinda of work. Hard to fix propotions and such thing after add details. While in Zbrush it works great. And i’m really learning with this project. Really thx for this oportunity

zhuzhu: unbelievable tonal values and depth… when looking at your images from further distance it looks just like it would be computer rendering of the 3d model. Such realism and still such an expressive painting. Great work.
I was wondering what kind of a brush and settings are you using for that?

#511

Please keep to the image posting guidlines (800x800pixel) otherwise the screen stetches.

I have had a delay, my PC needed a clean xp install, in the process all my hard drives were wiped by accident, long with lots of frustrating routines. I will try to catch up. I’m on my 4th image right? I am only guessing due to all the scanned images being eradicated. To catch up I will do less rendered heads, some fast sketches with a pen I think. Soon I will be getting a new leadholder and lots of 4B spare leads, which I will give a whirl.

#512

thanks~! i used openCanvas 1.1 for these sketchs. i like the Pen brush all the time, use the pen pressure for blending, just like pencil on paper.

#513

I thought zhuzhus 007 head was a 3d model until I put my glasses on,lol. incredible! Zhuzhu is definitely in my top 3 on this thread.

#514

Thanx for info Zhuzhu! I use Painter IX, and wil try to create similar brush, and see what will happen.
Keep your posts comming! :bounce:
And the same goes to everybody else! Great thread!

Off-topic: Gee thats a fancy theme u got for windows, is that for the new Vista OS?

toontje - Glad to see that you hadn’t given up. You are doing well. Keep going.

PixelPlay - Thank you. Not too shabby yourself. Your work is lovely.

ha-dou-ken - You’ve never painted before? Yeah, I’d say you’re definitely on the right track.

sweetintoxication - you might want to include the number of the reference you were using. Also, the image is too big for browsing. About half to a third would be better.

Omi-kun - Don’t worry too much about the style for now. I think you’re doing well getting the forms and the values down. You can download the stand-alone Quicktime here. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

Rebecca - #019 and #100 are the same image.

Will post a few later today.

Wow, it’s so great to see all the responses to this thread! :bounce:

ha-dou-ken,

Welcome, you are doing a fantastic job! Keep up the good work, let’s see more.

vitor,

Hey there, gorgeous stuff!

zhuzhu,

keep rockin’!

Fl3wk,

Really sorry to hear about that  ~ I highly recommend getting an external hard drive (I have several Western Digital and Maxtor brand external hard drives, ranging from 80-200 GB in size each) and backup fairly frequently. I understand your pain! Please don’t be discouraged from doing new work.

You guys are doing such a great job of both posting work and comments ~ thank you! Keep up the great work!!!

Cheers,

Wow this thread has just pulled lalong quite nicely while I’ve been ‘gone’ which I am totally inspired to see! I had to finish another thing I was working on before going back to this wonderful meditative practice. I learn something with every head.

ZhuZhu, it's truly beautiful, that last one - my favorite of yours so far. I really love how it seems to glow. Where do you learn to do strokes like that? Is it really just practice? Sometimes I think I'll never achieve anything like that. But it sure is wonderful to look at and examine -- I try to figure out how it was done, but it still looks like greek to me! :)

 ----

Here are my next two heads, 11 and 12 - I got behind from the July 4th Holiday, I'm trying to catch up!

It's funny that when I find a study kind of boring or not very attractive I don't do as well on it or sketch it out weakly. As you will see..... ;)

I used the airbrush to blend on this head - becuase I hadn't used it yet. I really flubbed the colors, in my anatomy thread I did a little exercise and found out (by color picking from the original and mine and showing the swatches below) that I really really needed to warm my colors up and go more yellow. But this is wonderful, I learn something about all this every day!

Back to grayscale for a bust - I also went back to my hard round brush @50% opacity to blend, and I have to admit that I really like it too. It just allows for so much control - and I'm all OCD like that :)

I generally ignore the hair - I asked before but - is that ok? Should I work on the hair? Or does it really matter? I guess I could really use the practice… probably why I avoid it…

Hey guys, thanks for you encouraging words. I’m sorry to say that I’m dropping out for the time being. The paperwork is piling up my desk at the office so it is obviously prudent of me to switch back .

This is my third head, head 19 I think , that pope fella that looks like Robin Williams. The scan is badly done, but the only scanner we have at the office is an old fax machine. I hope that this is an improvement over my previous attempts. I thought that this would be easy, but it was the hardest.
