Anatomy Crusade!!! of Darktwin

#1

Hello everyone my name is Darktwin, I’m a student of the arts currently studying at the academy of art University. I thought it was about time for me to start an anatomy thread to share and grow in this awesome enviornment. Please feel free to comment/crit and ask questions.

Below is a class that I’m currently taking at the AAU, called

Ecroche: An anatomical representation of all or part of the body with the skin removed so as to display the musculature.

The scale of the clay sculpture is 1/2. it stands at about 34 inches. This process from start to finish is an entire 14 week project. The class meets 1 day a week for 6 hours.

We first start with the creation of the armature, next blocking in the large masses of the body, torso pelvis and head. Getting the angles and relations of location points on the body, (how wide the torso is, height of the head, angle of the head, neck, and torso in its natural standing postion.

The next step was to work on the skeleton anatomy getting the actual s curves of the bones. sectioning out the ribcage. (took several tries before I was happy with it). Getting the structure of the skull. angles, angles, angles. them from the head we moved down to the pelvis and then down the legs to the feet.

After the skeleton is complete, we moved to the left side of the body by first adding the mucsles of the face, down the neck, toros, by adding all the visual mucsles of the body. Now we actually did go in and add the superficial mucsles that help create the visual muscles, but there was no need spending alot of time on those muscles underneath, but it was awesome to know where they’re located. From the torso we again moved down to the pelvis and leg. As of now We have the upper leg completed, We have the lower leg, shoulder, and hand left. I will update next class

Great to see you here Darktwin! Can’t wait to see more of your work!

#5

omg that looks like much fun!

nice work so far

#6

It looks great so far. 34"! Jeez I wish could have worked at that scale. We had to do ours at a 12" scale. I don’t think you could detail the hands, well easily. Also it took me a month to figure out how to use the paring knife for sculpting. I was using it backwards.

Thanks for checking out my progress everyone :), I will reply to all of you guys soon, just wanted to add some bridgeman studies I’ve been doing.

#8

continuation of the bridgeman studies

#9

Fantastic to see these additional studies, wish more people did full pages like these - you learn so much from them!

#10

Yeah Rebecca, these studies are really great exercises. I plan on doing most of the bridgeman book. Its not just about drawing them, I really try to understand what I’m drawing. The muscles of the torso, leg, structure and of the nose, etc.

Rebecca, I also ordered the Aanatomy hogarth book, and the anatomy Atlas, I really liked what you had to say about studying from multiple sources in a thread over in CA. More studies to come when I get the time to them. Thanks for stopping in everyone.

#11

Hi Darktwin!! Awesome studies, dude!!

#12

Yay, Bridgman is great! Studying from him myself now and it’s a pleasure to see someone else doing that too. Keep up with these.
And maaan, what a sculpture. Wouldn’t say no for doing such on my own. Must be awesome for learning anatomy, eh? A question here, where will it go when it’s finished?

#13

The clay skeleton is great! it looks like so much fun. Your studies are very cool too.

#14

NR43: Thanks

Thanks everyone for your replies. The semester just ended for me yesterday and I’m very excited that its over so I can now focus on areas I need to. Thanks for being patient. I’m very excited that my ecroshe model is complete. That truely has to be one of the best classes I have ever taken in my life. The class was taught by an amazing instructor, Stephen Perkins who is going to be selling his ecroche model in the spring. I’ll keep you all posted when its released. His model has much more information than the freedom to teach anatomy model which I have and want to sell now my professor is producing one. thanks for viewing everyone.

Now back to the anatomy Crusade!
