Anamorphic workflow in After Effects ...

#1

Hey guys,

I’ve being provided with a squished plate, which i believe is anamorphic right? To be honest, in the 7 years of working in VFX, i’ve never had to deal with this before, lucky me lol, or not

I’m tasked with adding a matte painting into the shot.

Can someone please tell me the general workflow of working with this file in after effects, and exporting this back out for the client the same way it was provided.

I understand the typical workflow of After Effects, just not while using an Anamorphic plate.

Thanks in advance.
Dave.

Hi Dave,

You have to know the pixel aspect ratio (how much the image is squeezed) and set up AE / Photoshop accordingly. In AE you can set this in the composition settings, in photoshop you will find it under view > pixel aspect ratio.

Once you set up AE / Photoshop with the correct pixel aspect ratio you will basically be working with the original squeezed resolution, but you can toggle on a preview to view the image unsqueezed, just like you toggle a LUT to view log images.
In Photoshop the toggle is right under the pixel aspect ratio sub menu, in AE the toggle is on the bar below your viewer.
