AMD Ryzen worth for CGI stuff?

Thank you. I found no mentions of dual sockets and thought I must just be bad at googling. :slight_smile:

We have to update some designer rigs later this year, and seems like Zen architecture could be an affordable way to get into dual CPU configurations. Need to calculate the cost/reward ratio though - only about 15% of our work consists of something 3D related, and other production apps just don’t scale that well… Reduced idle time while rendering would most likely make the investment worthwhile, depending on the pricing.

The underlying CPU architecture AMD is using is called Zen. The desktop processors based on Zen are branded as Ryzen. There will be server processors based on Zen but they’ll be under different branding and they’ll have some modifications to make them suitable for multiple socket configurations (HyperTransport circuitry so processors can access memory on other processors).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_(microarchitecture)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperTransport
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-uniform_memory_access

Prior to 2001 processors didn’t have a memory controller on die because the memory controller was on the motherboard. So processors could be used in multiple socket configurations without any changes because all of the changes were on the motherboard (e.g. Pentium 3 dual socket motherboards, Athlon XP could be used in place of Athlon MP by shorting a jumper). Now that the memory controller is on the processor the performance is much better for memory but it complicates multiple processor socket configurations.

intel is already dropping prices in reaction it appears:

Nice, a little competition for a change. And mildly annoying as well, I just ordered a 6850k rig a few weeks ago.

Can always keep an eye on the Corona benchmark to see how the Ryzens are doing - so far only two people have tested :slight_smile:

(just clear the search, or search for other processors, to see how things are comparing)

Renderperformance-wise it seems to be very nice:

Here are some tests done by Hrvoje Cop from Studio Niskota.

Ryzen is solid, perfect choice for cg industry.
You can check benchmark test here

Many guys compare Ryzen 7 with intel i7 which is idiocy. Intel i7 6700k & 7700k quad core is outdated stuff. Next generation is multithreading which you can get in Ryzen 7 at low cost. Ryzen 7 is nearly equal to intel 6900k at half of price. If you are a fan of intel then also give your support to AMD to break monopoly and outdated technology.

@sentry66
Ryzen also support embree very well.
