AMD Phenom 9600 Vs. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

#1

I’m planning to make some renovation to our small renderfarm and i was looking for information about the new AMD Phenom’s performance.

I’ve found this:

I think it could be biased, so i’d like to know some real user’s opinion based on experience.

I’ve been using AMD for years, but lately i’m doubtful.

Thanks

i would recomende AMD only if u can find a cheap solution to use 2 x quadcore Phenom on a single computer, intel XEON is too expensive. Otherwise there is no reason in favor of AMD, Intel is the way. U shoyld check out also Skulltrail from intel,

looks very yummy :), hopefully not very expensive.

you’ll probably get more response by posting in the hardware section, there’s only going to be LW users here.

I’m surprised that a Mod hasn’t already moved it

Well, i’m a Lightwave User. I believe that in certain tasks AMD cpus were much better than Intel’s years ago (LW volumetrics i think). I mean, apparently CPU’s bahaviour depends directly on the program used. I’m more interested about perfomances particularly with LW that’s why i posted this here.

Yup - Sadly seems AMD are starting to now slip behind Intel. I also checked up a few sites for the Phenom’s performance, and was kinda disappointed by what I saw. We also had one of our LWUG members show us performance spec’s for rendering in LW and Vue between his fast Dual Core and new Q6600 - Very impressive.

The other thing is that the Q6600 was actually cheaper here in NZ then the lowest Phenom. AMD was once a lot cheaper then Intel… The tables have turned a little…

Toms Hardware have some great charts to compare a wide range of hardware - I was considering AMD Dual Core, but the Q6600 is quite ‘up there’ in terms of performance.

I think one problem AMD may have is( for me at lest) you cant just buy a pc with it in it. if you do find place the price isnt right. not sure if im making my self clear. I guess let say you go to dell, hp um fill in blank. 1st thing you see is intel base. so trying to configure an AMD is kind of tricky. i have tried but it ends up costing more then if i just went with what the intel was set up with.
