Hi, I haven’t been to the CG Society forums in a few years and decided to come back in search of assistance from other artists. Working on trying to get my art to a professional level but I already know I have a long ways to go. Right now, I’m wondering what point I’m at on that journey and what comes next 'cause I’m feeling like I’ve hit a wall and maxed out my potential <:(

Here’s one of my most recent works I did trying to push my technical skills to their limit. Please, any feedback is most welcome, and tips and advice most appreciated.

I think it’s a cool sketch! Some of the eyes should perhaps be visible. This would help to give it more impact as well. The hair also has a bit of a chunky look to it. Shading on top of the hat looks a bit too flat, and the beanie too large. However, as a sketch I think it fulfills its goal…if you were to take this further into a detailed painting, that would raise the technical standard and there would be a lot more to crit on.

Try not to see your brushstrokes just as breaking up the amount of gradation into “bandings” like you do now. Think of your brushstrokes as representing an entire plane in the form, so that you are in fact, simplifying the value ranges into distinct planes. This will help make your work more solidified, as well as helping the forms read more clearly, while achieving better coherency overall in terms dynamic range and value management.

Thanks for the crits and advice. I’ll try working on it some more, or maybe try another, and see what I come up with.
