Freelancers working in the creative industries lose an estimated £5,394 each a year through working for free. A freelance filmmaker says it’s time to stop businesses exploiting contractor https://www.theguardian.com/small-business-network/2017/may/18/all-work-and-no-pay-creative-industries-freelancers-are-exploited?CMP=share_btn_link

Freelancers are no more "exploited "than any other groups who enter into an agreement without a proper contract.

Honestly I can not believe there are still people daft enough to give away free creative services for “exposure”

This is 2017
The age of the self branded self marketed individual via social media etc

There are people making full time living posting videos on youtube
doing silly things like reviewing video games or commenting on dating/relationships
They have subscribers and supporters on Patreon and get ad revenue
for posting rubbish.

The biggest problem with young people starting in CG is that they spend too much time learning Nerdy Mcnerd techno babble about
3DCC software what is hot in the CG industry.
and they never develop real world business/marketing skills.

I get the impression that being expected to work for free or close to free happens a lot more in the photography and videography industry than in the 3D industry. I think that industry suffers from the fact that everybody has a camera nowadays. Everyone has a computer too but there’s a relatively steep learning curve for 3D software still.

That’s why freelancering is a type of job for the expirienced people who exactly know how to protect themselves from this kind of situations.
