Align Vertices question

#1

I imagine this is simple but after an hour of searching I can not figure it out.

So I would like to use the scale tool to align the vertices/faces but keep the correct verts from moving. (I know hard to understand - so here is an illustration)
Also apologize if my terminology is not correct.
Here I have isolated the faces of my model:

The bottom right vert is in the correct position. The top left 4 verts are not.
Once aligned all faces will be as one flat surface.

Right side view:

Another side view:

I need the bottom right vert to not move. OR bottom face…if that is the easier approach…?

So I modified the axis using the “D” key to hopefully* be on a 90 from the bottom face normal: (*Not sure how to make the axis exact so it is just eyeballed)

When I then select the scale tool to crunch them all into alignment they all move (bottom right one too).
I want to pin the bottom right vert or maybe face and have the top left 4 verts align to it. Which will make all faces flat.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. Maybe I should be trying to align faces instead?

If I have made this confusing I will try to be clearer. Just let me know.

Two issues, you want the vertices to be moved so the faces are planar, and control where that plane will be.

  1. If you need the faces to be planar towards some other direction, select the scale tool and then press w and left click the mouse bringing up the menu. then hover over axis>then custom>then set to face or edge etc. This selection then sets the orientation of the scale tool to custom. you can use any object’s face for this selection.
  2. With the scale tool still selected, move the scale gizmo to the vertex you want to preserve by pressing d and v on the keyboard and then middle clicking the mouse on that lower vertex.
The scale tool should now be rotated and positioned properly in space, now just shrink the scale in the axis you want.

Cheers,
Pete

BIG THANKS Pete!!

Wow, I would have never found or even thought of that.
That works PERFECT!!

And bonus for getting the right axis without just trying to eyeball it like I have been doing.

Thank you for taking the time to help me today.

I am a very relieved and now more productive user.

There are multiple scripts available for aligning vertices with one click. Take a look at HighEnd3D.com if you tend to need this often. I use one all the time, simply “Vertex Align” is the name.

That’s interesting.
Thanks I’ll have a look.
