Alien 2 - Model

#21

Hi :wavey:
the overall shapes look perfect, maybe he needs just some little details like cloth folds & finger nails, not sure about these stuff, must ask Kirt.
anyway, it’s a really nice job you’ve done.

Hi Ila, thanks. I’ll stop playing with him until kirt posts here. I don’t want to head in a direction and be told that its not right. Hopefully kirt will have a look here soon and let me know what other steps need to be taken

Looking really good to me. All I see is the need for the head tentacles to be a more consistent roundness and maybe a bit larger. His head a bit wider in the lower part and then a better crease at the top of his tummy. But I’m not Kirt. My 2 cents.

I think he’s looking pretty good. I’d spend some more time on his arms, hands and head though.

His arms look a little too thin for an alien of his girth. The spot at his armpit where the material is pulled outwards looks really odd.

The hands need that extra pudgy-ness as well. The most common mistake I see when people model hands is that they make the palm the same size as the back of the hand (the separation of the fingers line up vertically). Look at your own hand - the first knuckles are offset a good inch back from where the palm edge is.

I don’t want these characters to have anatomically correct hands, but I also don’t want them to appear like CG common flaws either. Sorry … didn’t mean to go off there. The hands could use some work.

The head looks pretty good, but maybe is a tad to large on the top. His facial features are also too anatomically correct. Measure up the concept sketches and you’ll find the top of his mouth at about the mid point of his head and his eyes are positioned in the upper quarter of his head.

He’s getting there … just some minor tweeks and maybe a bit more detail like Ila has suggested.

Keep going :wip:

It coming along very nice! Carry on…

#26

Hey everyone thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I’m not to sure that I understand what you’re saying about the hands Kirt but I have made some changes and will post them again soon to see If I have the right idea. Anyway…

Been busy recently but I have found time to play around with the face. Just wondering if this is more along the lines of what you want the face to look like.

#27

Heres the update, still using the same head as above. I have also worked on the hands but I’m not sure I quite get what you mean kirt. If its possible can you do a draw over on these images to show any changes you want? Any C&C appreciated.

#28

I think you’re getting closer to the form. The mouth in the front view needs to look more “flesh over a skull”, right now you have the fish mouth look. It looks more on target in the side view. Just my .02

thanks blue, I really do see what you mean. I think that this is better. What do you think?

 Yes, it’s now better … keep up tweaking! he needs just little adjusment in eyes placement, jaw and the width of the head. and also nosetrills. :wip:

#31

It looks like Kirt set up the face for eyes like normal proportions so you need the width of the eyes in space between the eyes. The way it is the space is a bit wider than that.

hmmm, its been a while between posts. Here is the latest round of updates. Made various changes all over this guy. A few posts ago folds in the cloth were mentioned, where do you thinkg I should place then? Just over the stomach area? A draw over would help heaps.

sorry the image quality isn’t to good but once again any comments appreciated.

Paint over and comments coming up … check again this weekend.

Sorry I didn’t get to this earlier. :argh:

#34

I find that pictures are worth a thousand words, but if you want a lengthy explaination of all this just let me know.

#35

“Tentacles not hotdogs”
Are you sure? this could really set the model appart:D

Thanks alot Kirt thatst awesome. I’m pretty sure I get everything so a lengthy explanation shouldn’t be necessary. I’ll try to update soon.

#36

Hey this is Awesome! I know I’m getting ready to see a quantum leap forward for this model! Keep up the great work!

#37

Ok, have done a bit of work on the model. I think the hands look much better an dare a lot closer to the design. Also put work in on the head but I think hte lower lip ma be a little to fat now. Not much work on wrinkles in the clothes yet (almost none infact). Hopefully next update will include nostrils, thicker teeth and the fixup on the boots.

Kirt: just one question about your draw over. In the side view it looks like you have made the pant cuffs(at the top of the leg) smaller. At the moment they are gone but did you want them back and smaller?

C&C, as usual, very welcome.

#38

wow! … I think now we have all the main characters mesh ready.
next step (after tweaking the meshes) is adding shaders and textures, that will begin soon.

#39

wow that was a big jump indeed

I still think there are some problems that need fixing before we go to the next stages though. you’re right about everything you said adam…i took another look at all the sketches and it looks like the bottom lip shouldn’t be so pronounced. there should just be a sort of mold under it in the middle, like in kirts latest sketch. there’s also some sort of bump below the cheek (visible in the side view)

#40

He’s looking better

The pant cuffs are removed completely. I actually copy and pasted from one of your earlier WIP images. Ignore the pencil lines over the front and side view on the right. What I want is the legs that appear at left.

I’m also thinking that the yellow part on the boots is going to create problems when animating. I wanted this thing to be a metal brace like contraption on his shoe. However, when he walks I think there’s going to be to much deformation there. What do the experienced riggers think? Maybe we should go with some other boot design?

The mouth can be larger still. I think in the side view if you pull the corners of the mouth back to line up with the outside corners of the eyes it’ll look much better.

Top portion of the arms can also be larger in the side view. He should have the look of an out of shape ex-wrestler. He’s got mass from the muscle that’s now turned to flab. If that makes sense.

Keep going … almost there :wip:
