After Effects VS Davini Resolve/Fusion for VFX and/Or Compositing?

#1

I’m a little torn between 2 pieces of Software and was hoping for some insight here as I don’t really know where else to ask this. Google search didn’t give me enough of an answer to aid in my decision.

What would you consider is the best software for Compositing and vfx between After Effects and Davini Resolve/Fusion ? I want to be able to take my rendered animation using either Octane, Redshift or even Eevee at times and bring it into software I can composite live footage in (sometimes), add effects either/or particles volumes etc, colour grade (and fx) etc and basically end up with a well presented video of my creations.

Sometimes I want turntable animation of high quality 3D characters, creatures etc, sometimes do transition effects of the passes. Sometimes I want to create shorts which would have 3D Rendered environments, vehicles etc and sometimes I want to incorporate 3D into live footage when I upgrade to a decent Camera.

I’m new to filming and animation but I can model all the way to rendering. The layers vs Node system doesn’t bother me as I can use both. Price doesn’t bother me. Although I’ve been trying to get away from subscriptions, Ditching Foundry software for alternatives etc but I do use Photoshop and £10 a month isn’t bad at all for what Photoshop can do.

Thanks for even reading this and double ta for any advice or insight.

you should focus on DaVinci. I’m not saying that aftereffect is not good. But for what you mentioned above I would have used DaVinci, and you can also get more detailed articles about it on e-learning platform They are also writing on the same niche.

Same newbie here. Heard from some youtubers, the ways to use these 2 tools might be different. I haven’t made a decision between DaVinci Resolve and Adobe After Effects yet. ( I just installed Davinci Resolve, not ready to learn it. )
I happen to see a post talking about After Effects alternative from VideoProc. You can google: after effects alternatives free. That post should be found on the 3rd or 4th page. It said DaVinci Resolve has better performance on VFX and compositing as it is node based and highly integrated, and made some explanation for the result.

:worried: Wish to getting advises form some pro members in this community.

After Effects is not up to the task of complex tracking. It’s a good software for a lot of things, even really simple composites sometimes. As soon as your comp requires more than 5 layers, you should have used Fusion/Resolve (or Nuke)
