After Effects and 3D MAX

#1

Hi,

So I’v been working on a project and in it I have a huge wall mounted screen that appears in the background of many of my shots, I thought I could render the screen in max with nothing on it, just a glass texure, then later on, apply footage I made to the screen in after effects with an add blending mode, for stills it looks pretty good.

For very short sections of video, I have managed to, frame by frame, modify the orientation of the screen overlay to achieve a decent result, however, I have come to a point where there is a large section of video with the screen visible, I have tried manually positioning the screen frame by frame but when i play it back, it flickers and jumps around and its not a natural motion.

Whats the best way to track the screen, I know after effects alone isnt capable of 3D tracking, is there any way to include a video withing the max render, or a simple way to basically, apply the video footage to the screen in either max of after effects so that when my camera is moving around, the screen track accordingly.

Any help would be great,

Thanks.

Max2AE plugin from Boomer Labs was made to do this.
You could try render a tracker marker on the screen in 3dsmax, which you could track in AE, but that will only get you XY position. Would have to animate rotation manually.

I’d just get the plugin and be done with it.
