Aerial Sunrise

#1

Hey guys,

So I am trying to get a demo reel together now and I want all the matte paintings to have a camera move and use 3D projection. I have been trying to come up some new ideas and scenes to work on. And I wanted to start posting right from the start so you guys can see how I am working and possibly offer crits/ideas or learn from what I am doing.

I came up with the idea about doing aerial matte painting of a city (possibly futuristic). I found this plate photo today and I figure its a good place to start planning the scene. I choose it for a few reasons. One is that the file is a good size of 5616x3744. I am not a fan of the lighting but its coming from an interesting direction and shouldnt need a huge amount of changes when making the sunrise. And with the file size being so bit and having a ton buildings already in the scene I hopefully can sample textures from the plate which can also save a lot of time.

Here is the plate photo:

I hope to update this thread later with a basic concept for a direction I might go

Thanks guys

Here is the concept so far, just playing around with the lighting and trying to get a feel for the space. I will start playing around with some cloud cover soon, see if I can come up with anything that might help the composition.

If anyone is interested I did a quick test render of the basic scene as a camera projection. I didnt do any fancy modeling yet. I just wanted to test out the plate so I have a better understanding of what I will need to do. The video is uploaded to youtube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1F6ebecTfE

Thanks for the comments guys! I hope I can pull this one off. Tomorrow is going to be about refining the concept and hopefully designing some large structures. And now that I have my perspective lined up in 3D studio I will be able to spend some time playing with shapes.

I found this reference earlier and I really like the color and over all atmosphere so I will be using it as my guide to getting the same look in my matte.

Thanks again!
