It’s my first post here but I’ve read the site for many years.
Quick question about the academic/faculty license. Is it possible for someone in academia to purchase the license for me to use?
Here’s my situation. I used to work in the industry for many years got burned out but starting to get back into it. I used SI:3D & XSI for a long while and it’s the software I’m most comfortable with, however, I’m not plush with cash just now and not one for using pirated software. My sister is a teacher and I was reading about the academic license and it sounds like this could be a route for me to purchase it.
Is this abiding by Softimage’s terms and conditions, etc?
If your sister was going to be teaching a class on how to use softimage, and you attended that class. Then it might be okay.
If you are planning on using an academic license for commercial use. This is obviously not abiding by softimage’s terms and conditions.
Basically, it seems like you have found someone that is willing to help you in circumventing the system. If caught, you and your sister and the school your sister works for could all get into some very big trouble. How much? I don’t know. But do keep in mind. Softimage is now owned by Autodesk and you don’t screw with Autodesk.
You could try maybe using the softimage mod tool. There is also blender. You could also try modelers like wings3d or if you have a little cash, silo (yuck).
Thank you for the replies, really helpful and clears up a few things for me. I wouldn’t go down that path of obtaining Softimage if it went against the companies policies and for personal ethics reasons. I just wasn’t sure how academic licenses work since I’ve never really had to go down that road before and how various companies view it.
Once I know I have some time to really concentrate on SI I’ll download the trial and fire away at it. I’ll send you a wee email Jennifer and explain my situation a bit better and thanks again for all the help and the offer of it!
