a scanner darkly look. where to begin?

#1

Just looking for some basic info on the look utilized in the upcoming “a scanner darkly” film. I’ve been wanting to utilize a look like this only in black and white. are the VFX guys painting over each frame of the footage? god, i hope not. I read that they have some in house software to assist. So is there a certain technique i should be looking into? I’m using C3 by the way. thanks!

AFAIK, they are painting over it, although I’m sure they do have an in-house products to assist in interpolations etc…

If you want a simple version of that fx you could use the “find edges” operator and just invert it and you’ll get a white background with black lines. put a grey color operator to get the colour spill away. If you need you can play a bit wiith the contrast operator to get more crisp lines.
Hopes this helps a little.
