7.01 available anywhere?

#1

Is the 7.01 update available anywhere (from a legit source)? I got the email when it was released but I never bothered to download it. I had no idea the file would be taken away.

I wrote Autodesk asking about it but I have yet to hear back. I found the old link on the Softimage site but the file has been removed.

Any help appreciated.

I think the only way to get it ‘legitimately’ now is to purchase the Autodesk Subscription for Softimage.

Thanks Jdex. I was afraid that was going to be the answer. I was hoping that CG World (or something similar) would have included it in one of thier cd’s.

From now on I’m downloading any software update immediatley.

If you do find a demo CD, you’re still out of luck. The demo would have needed to connect to softimage licensing to activate a demo license. But, since autodesk assimilated and disconnected the softimage licensing system, you won’t be able to get that license.

the demo cd on 3dworld was also an earlier RC build than what went gold.
If you can find a more recent demo download (maybe somebody you know downloaded it) though you can use that, it’s exactly the same installer of finals, and if you already have an spm license to run it you won’t have issues.

Thanks for that link above! ^^^^

That thread made it sound like I may possibly hear from my Autodesk about this. I’ve got a valid 7.0 license running now but I didn’t buy maintenance.

How crucial is the 7.01 update anyway? I’m a longtime Lightwave user and I actually haven’t played around with XSI much. I bought Essentials, installed it, and planned to start going through the training next week.

it contains a lot of bugfixes and a newer MR. I recommend you install this one as well

As a sort of follow-up question to this - how much the 7.5 actually differs from 7.01?
I upgraded my foundation (6.02) license to 7.01 and I’m currently wondering if I should upgrade again to 7.5 thanks to the merger and name change.

It’s not like I absolutely want to be using the very latest version, but I do want major enhancements and I guess you need to pay way more dollars if you don’t use the offers available whenever new version is published. (Just that 3 upgrades to a software in less than a year gets a little wallet-hostile

If you don’t go under maintenance (which is likely to get you a v8 and in the meantime support and 7.5) probably not. 7.5 is a release that was meant to reward maintenance even before the acquisition, and for Soft .5 releases are small, anything with big improvments are .0s.

If you plan to go under maintenance then yes, it’s actually an ok release, and scenes are backward compatible (other than a couple ops you might need to freeze and a newer MRay which could leave to backporting a scene rendering very slightly differently if you were to mix rendering nodes).

Basically too big to be just a bugfixes minor, but not really much in terms of bling features. Think of it as a 7.2 if you’re not used to Soft’s numbering.

An update to my original post -

Autodesk licensing sent me a link to 7.01. I’m now running that version. They answered all my questions and got me the link right away.
