4:3 to 16:9

#1

hy all
I have a big/small problem. My cameraman shot a sequence in 4:3, but I need it in 16:9 … I manipulated the pixel aspect ratio to Pal D1 Anamorphic, but I can’t render it with the Mainconcept DV codec from Combustion.
Can somebody tell me how to convert 4:3 footage into 16:9 in Combustion (it’s a DV footage) without to much quality loss?
thnx

Im not too sure about Combustion (still learning it myself) but I know there are some good tools in After Effects that will give you that effect - some plugins like Cinelook and FilmFX are good for that look…
…other than that Im not too sure how you would do it at this point (too tired to think).

When you changed the pixel aspec ratio to 19x9 wouldnt it have stretched the footage horisontally? I guess that could be what you want.

Anyway, just use another codec - I’m pretty sure Quicktime has a 16x9 DV codec (has on my machine anyway)

Hi there,

Man I’m sorry to say that you can’t do that, once you recorded in 4:3 the only way will you have to change him to 16:9 is doing a upsampling of the video, with lot’s of loss on the quality, and very weird crop.
If you change a 4:3 footage with pixel aspect ratio of 0,9 to 16:9 with pixel aspect ratio of 1,2, you will get a very streched picture.
Do some tests with the pixel aspect ratio turned on in your composition, and you will see.

If it was from 16:9 to 4:3 would be very easy thing to do, without any loss in quality at all.

I hope this helps,
See Ya!

Does Combustion have a tool to change the pixel ratio?

In Digital Fusion I can use the letterbox tool and take a 720x486 @ 4:3 to 720x486 @ 16:9 without any image distortion.

Hy all
I managed to solve this problem by adjusting the aspect ratio and with cropping out from the footage. :frowning:
Thnx all
