3DSMAX 2016 - Trying to replicate an effect from Blender

Hello.
I´m confortable building meshes, but I´m a complete newbie when the topic comes to maps, renderings and effects.
.I read a thread where a friend tells how he managed to replicate that effect of impulse engines in Star Trek ships, just using the default Blender tools and shaders and two objects.

I would like to achieve this effect using just the default tools of max and render. Is it possible? A tut would be helpfull.
