3DS Max Slow At Compiling DirectX Shader

I am using a custom HLSL effect file to develop lighting for a game level in 3D Studio Max. I am creating multiple DirectX materials using this one shader. Every time that I create a new material, 3DS Max is unresponsive for about two minutes. I assume that MAX is compiling the HLSL into assembly. My question is, could I get max to not compile this code every time, and just use a precompiled version?
