3DS Max - Models that are supposed to look hard turn out soft?

#1

Hello everyone, i am a Maya user however due to a job opportunity i took up Max, i still haven’t fully gotten the hang of it and the one thing thats breaking my brain is that everything i model looks like i chose the “soften edge” option in maya, how can i fix this in Max?

Here are the examples, in the rist pic is the model imported into maya from max, on on the second is the same model i managed to fix and make it look like what its supposed to look like

Hi, @vlada-kisin ,

One of the “tricks” 3D softwares use to make things look smooth is to artificially smooth out the edges between faces in the render, making it look like curved surfaces are perfectly curved as opposed to a series of planar triangles.

Of course, the software has to know which edges it should smooth out, otherwise it ends up smoothing things where you don’t want it to (or not smoothing things where you want it to).

In 3ds Max there are a few ways in which you can set which groups of faces should be smoothed and which shouldn’t.

You can manually set smoothing groups within the editable poly (or mesh) modifier, but it’s not very practical if you have complex geometry.

The fastest way is to use the Smooth Modifier, than you can set the maximum angle at which adjacent faces should be considered the same smoothing group.
