3d Sculpting Workshop - Old Age

#361

I was without internet for about a week so im sorry for posting late.

well here it is so far. Its not terribly great though. I should probably do some details on that forehead. And for a 2d to 3d copy how do you think the likeness is? recognizable? accurate?

Claybub…Ericyeo …GREAT TO SEE YOU BOTH JOING IN ON THIS WORKSHOP… …REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR PIECES DEVELOPE…THEY LOOK GREAT SO FAR, …TO ME ANYWAY.

Going back now and starting to do and refine the details, starting with the hands…long long ways to go…
Glenn

[left]claybub - I think it’s looking very good but I would exaggerate more on the nose

ericyeo - The face needs more definition, the ears, the eyes.

Glenn - Let me thank you again for your comment the other day ;). I’m going to be a little harsh but I really think you should start all over again but with a different base mesh. That one is not letting work. You have some good ones that come with zbrush, with transpose you can quicly give them a pose and them start sculpting. You will see that it’s going to be a lot easier

Glenn - thank you! I agree with jr2joao - that it would be easier to start again with a new, more organized mesh, so you would not have to face the problems you have now with the fingers and toes. I know you don’t have experience modeling in other 3d packages so that might be difficult… I believe you have tried using the basic man in zbrush 3 though? How about posing him and extracting some mesh for the cloth out of that character? Have you tried that? There are really good tutorials in the zbrush wiki.
Anyway I still think it’s great to see you stick to your own style - which is distinct - and going for it. Still new experiences might help widen the possibilities… Keep going!

Caleb - great to see you join it! I agree about the nose not being sharp and defined enough otherwise awesome job as always. Really like the beard!

ericyeo - Welcome  I think you should make the head a little bigger and longer. I really like the job you’ve done on the cloth till now  Keep at it!

[left]Well, here it is:

#367

jr2joao - good stuff - try making the wrinkles deeper - the reference image has really deep cut wrinkles… also I feel your eyes are too big at the moment, try making the eyelids more drooping, and covering the eyeball a bit more. One other thing - you might want to pull the nose tip downwards a bit

well a very tiny bit more… she’s becoming a pain :scream:

Excellent work everyone, some amazing pieces in here in such a short time. Loving the character in yours Intervain, a nice topic for a model  I’ll join in once this Hardcore challenge is done.

#369

Finished the basic mesh… tomorrow i will start detailing in zbrush and add some screenshot great work in this workshop one of the best sculpt ever seen. I guess that a lot of this image will be added to pixologic site

hi Magdalena this is looking realy great.
i have few crits. something about the eye socket and the eye lids looks odd to me. the crease between the upper eye lid and the eye brows seems a little too high and too round. also it could be drooping towards the side of the head dues to old age. the wrinkles on the fingers between the joints seem over done and little too sharp. over all many of the wrinkles look to organised and parallel to each other.

#371

fx81 - great crits thanks! You’re right… especially about the wrinkles being too parallel - that’s my feeling as well… will look into it!

Hello there,
This is my first attempt to do digital sculpting. I was checking out this thread and decided to give it a try. I’m using mudbox and the superAverageMan.obj from the zbrush forum. The bw photo is my reference.

p.s. You can see my “analog” sculpting here

Hi all!

Finally I can enter this amazing thead whith so much good artists and inspiration! Thats gonna be fun!
As it is an old age topic, I decided to try to do my favourite old age person of all, my 78 years old grand mother, that I love so much!
Here are two reference pictures of her, (that was so gentle to pose for me for the photos, I think she liked it a lot…haha), and my starting point basemesh, with the progress till now!
CC are welcomed! Best regards to all!

Dalton

Hey Magdalena!

Your piece is coming along fantastic  I had a few crits along the same lines of fx81. Hopefully you don’t mind.

The thing I liked about your piece originally was the subtlety of the wrinkles, with the latest update it feels like you have overworked it a tad and the creases are too uniform. For me, this is especially evident with the bags under the eyes, above the lips and the neck, it could possiby be that its too symetrical. Personally, I really like the hands and the forehead wrinkles are looking great also.

Hope you don’t mind the crit, your works great and I’m sure your final piece will be fantastic!

Hey Darlton!

Its cool that we have another person joing the thread, your right there are some great artists doing this workshop, so inspirational  I really wanted to do a 3D model of my Gran too but unfortunatley I don’t live close of enough her to take photos… I bet she is really happy about it, the photos you have taken are really nice! I think maybe you have maybe made her wrinkles a little more pronounced than they realy are though… I’m sure it will look great in the end!

Mr James - :scream: sure I don’t mind LOL - I like getting critique… the funny thing is I was criticized over at Zbrush Central for having too subtle and sketchy wrinkles so I made them harsher and reworked exactly the areas you guys are pointing out as overdone LOL… I think it’s fine though - with the skin matcap they look way more subtle than with this one and I think I’ll smooth them a bit still… I must say I’m just a tad confused because of the 2 opposing camps LOL Cheers!

Dalton-Muniz - welcome! Glad you’ve decided to join us :buttrock:

yamasaki - looking forward to your work

#376

Magdalena, Its most likely the shader that makes them look so clear cut  Looking forward to your next update!

Small update from me, tried to work on the symetry a bit. Also gave Kris’s material a bash, still modelled in Mudbox.

#377

zbrushcentral is not the best of places to get good crits i think:). tweakcg.com is a better place in my opinion. zbcentral is mostly populated with detail freaks and hobby artists. just because you can detail does not mean you have to.

btw, are you using any particular reference for this one. i ask becaus it sort of looks like your muse study head at the moment. also the top of the ear may need to droop down a bit.

#378

Mashru - LOL interesting description of ZBC… well I’ve never posted on tweakcg… perhaps I should though I’ve only seen crits of the ’ it’s awesome [even if it was far from it]’ sort, which are hardly helpful - so I’m not optimistic about that one either…

I am using several different references but none of them have drooping ears at the top  just stretched earloabs at the bottom… the problem I think is that I’ve started with one of the paintings for general head proportions and then used different refs for the wrinkles and such…so she’s not looking like anyone… and I guess you may think she looks like one of my other characters because I like giving them that simple hairstyle and high cheekbones etc… let’s say it’s the muse 60 years later :scream:

Magdalena…jr2joao …THANKS,… BUT NO THANKS… :scream:
I’m having to much fun doing battle with this one…
I’m mainly just trying to master all of these great sculpture carving tools that the new Z BRUSH program offers.
I am not an anamator , so I don’t really care about the mesh, or the mess that i’m making out of it… I just want to sculpt, and have my sculpture look like the drawing by DaVinci that I am doing the study of. …I will try that extraction thing further down the road, but I am going to master these carving tools FIRST…even if it kills me…

Magdalena…LOL…A COUPLE OF WORDS OF WISDOM CONCERNING YOUR PIECE …
TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN, SPOIL THE STEW…and
YOU CAN NEVER PLEASE EVERYONE, AND ONLY A FOOL TRIES TO…

GREAT JOB …EVERYONE…VERY INSPIRING WORKS …

A little more work on his hands.
