Then perhaps OGRE is something for you.
although it’s not a full game engine but only a graphincs, but’s it’s great community is coming with a lot of usefull tools for and the is YAKE (game) Engine coming up which shall make use of OGRE engine

For the price of 0 buck you’re still able to have a engine that renders high quality images.

I would agree that Ogre is something to consider. I am the Art Lead for an Open-Sourced MMORPG project and we chose Ogre as our 3D engine. It has all the bells and whistles of today’s current engines. The community is also very active and will answer questions very fast. This last portion is probably more important than any other features you would want to look at.

It may sound somewhat hard, but try programming your own engine. You’ll learn much from it. Learn C(++) and OpenGL or DirectX. (I prefer OpenGL, because I think its somewhat easier than Direct3D and more portable to other platforms).

i’m also making my own engine right now and its been very rewarding (you’ll just feel so great when things succeed while making this engine).

I agree. I think you will have a better understanding of how everything works. You may not want to try a commercial grade engine, but you could try that too!

Maybe you should take a look at the TORQUE game engine (TGE) you can buy a addon RTS starter kit.

Enjoy

Indeed, Ogre is a very good option, same goes for the Torque Engine (which sadly is not free, but its costs are minimal for what it can do).

Though, I’d strongly recommand looking over the Crystal Space engine as well. The official web site: http://www.crystalspace3d.org

As for a project developed under CS, I could point to PlaneShift (www.planeshift.it), which is indeed a very interesting and unique free MMORPG.
