It’s great to see you back, as usual, your works are an inspiration! I’d still like to see you do your Tutorials here, but it may have to wait til after SIGGRAPH if that is okay with you.

Beautiful work, especially that middle render!

hi everyone, hi Rebeccak,
i’m working on a new character, the concept come from Miles Teves. i work hard on anatomy, made a lot of drawing etc… i have some difficulties to translate it in 3d.
anyway here is my result so far, the anatomy is a bit mess up , i still need to work on the arms, legs, back … pretty much everything actully but rebeccak i’d like to have your throught about the mass and the form, etc… , it will be very appreciate.
here is a pic of the concept and one of my wip. hope you you like it

#184

This looks very nice Nicolas. The one thing that strikes me is you’re not emphasizing the hunch as much as the concept. It looks like the head is lower then the shoulders in the concept and it’s a quarter head above the shoulders in the model. If you’re modelling it to a neutral position for animation that makes sense – but it seems like a point of emphasis in the concept.

Rebecca can speak to the large shapes far better then I can, but I think you’re getting to a good place with this. A character like this will really start come to life in the texturing process :).

#185

hey kary, thanks a lot for your comment, i agree with you about the hunch attitude. i’ll work on it for sure. About the head, i don’t place the head like in the concept 'cause i had some problem with the neck, it didn’t look very natural , it looks like the head was directly attached to body so i put the head a bit higher. May be i should place the head like in the concept, in this case do you have a idea how the neck look like …

collings,

Great to see your new work! Are you working with Miles Teves, or just using one of his concepts? I’m only curious. I checked out his site, and he has just amazing work there!

The main area I think needs work is the back. I recommend looking at bodybuilder photos, such as the ones below from Google (I used the search term, ‘bodybuilder back’)

Additional pictures:
http://www.calfroller.com/frankierongo.com/bodybuilder/

There is also something about the forearms that look too long / skinny, and without the proper definition in terms of the wrist. The abs may seem a bit narrow and of varying width. I think in the drawing, the ankles are more pronounced and the feet a bit bigger / wider, giving him that apeish look. But overall, of course, this model is looking terrific!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

hey Rebeccak, thanks for your comment
i don’t work with miles, i just asked him authorization to use some of his concept. i pick three of them to model for my demoreel. one monster ( this one ), one human with armor and one beast(four legs) . i also finished a head based on one of his design that you can see here http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=369541

i 'll put more definition in the back and you’re right the feet need to be bigger, i’ll add some mass to them. What do you think about the general proportion …

Actually i’m not satisfy with what i have so far, that’s why i posted my progress here, we cannot feel the flesh feeling and that’s what i try to reach

if you have any specific advices about it , i’ll take them

About the wrist, what do you mean by “without the proper definition in terms of the wrist”

Anyway back to work,

thanks again rebeccak

collings,

I hope these paintovers help:

Before:

After:

Most of what I did was to change the axis relationships of the high points of the legs, and to increase the overall beef of the figure. I enlarged / widened the feet and shortened the arm and moved it farther away from his body. I softened the look of the abs which looked unnaturally well defined. Additionally I widened the chest so that he has more of an ogre appearance, and defined his wrists a bit more and put them in that sort of gorrilla position where the hand is bent back toward the body. I increased the shoulder mass to give him that ogreish appearance you’re after. Hope this helps!

Great modeling, with a few tweaks, I think he can look more menacing.

A great artist to look at for this sort of fleshy roundness is Rubens:

I recommend Googling a bunch of his drawings and paintings and maybe keeping some images on hand as Reference. Rubens is a master of exxaggerated, flowing form. Definitely check out his work!

Hi pencildj ,

Rebecca is out for a couple of days , so you might have to wait a little to have her review on your picture … If you don’t mind , I’m gonna try to give you my feelings about it :

From what I see , it seems you have a pretty good start , the overall proprtions seem ok …
Some points : I would be careful on the top of the torso , try to pay attention on the ribcage , I think it might needs some definition , the general shape seems a bit off especially on the back view. The waist appears very thin , even women don’t have such a curve on their back …

My main advice would be : everything seems really square , try to get some references of the body muscles and match your wireframe , edgeloops to it (some bodybuilders photos and/or anatomy sketches) … no matter how muscular model you’re reaching for , it will be really easier to tweak your model once you got the right muscles setup …

I don’t know what software you’re using , but there’s a thread by Stahlberg on the body topology in the maya forum … Maybe it would help you to reorganized your mesh even if you use another package …

Hope it helps

cheers ,

-Zapan

pencildj,

Hi there, welcome! Sorry for the long delay in answering your post, I didn’t see it til now ~ first I have to ask if you are using reference images to do your modeling. I highly recommend using a site such as www.3d.sk as they have a lot of Orthographic reference at a relatively low cost. Looking forward to hearing your reply.

EDIT: I see from your CGP that you do 2D work as well. I would encourage you to participate in the Tutorials and Workshops which we host here on the forum. I recommend subscribing here to be notified of when new Tuts / Workshops are announced:

I tried my best to follow the correct anatomy lines…but still struggling on the eye area.
The eyeball color are not correctly made so just ignore them. And uuhh…no ear yet…ahaha
Any comments that might lead to improvement are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ladywolf,

I also posted a reply to the Beginners’ Lounge, but one thing I would suggest is taking a look at Steven’s Body Topology Thread:

Body topology

Additionally, I think you would really benefit from doing Master Copies in pencil so as to increase your understanding of figurative form generally. I recommend trying at least 5-10 master copies from this thread:

She is right! I did a few heads, went back in max and BAM! A better head in half the time. She speaks the truth!
