3d design from texture NOT texturing 3d design

#1

Greetings, I hope I posted this in the correct location.

I am a very new 3d modeler and have am a big fan of line art or pencilling. that of which I want to capture in 3d. with rough lines.

i watched a video in which it appears a person takes textures. probably in .png format and and “folds” or “wraps” it into 3d he uses Maya as listed. how hard is something like this too do.

here is his youtube making of video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnnbTaMXDqQ
you will see the effect I wish to emulate at 1:00

this is what I want to do.

  1. take a drawing and convert it into a texture
  2. and fold these details into 3d shape.
  3. place. several textures together in groups so as to animate them as in the video above. I do not have plans to do extensive animation as they will be used in a game I am making. but I do want to make walk cycles, jump and regular game animation cycles

can this be done in programs like cinema 4d?

and since the peices are not welded, can they still be easily animated? for use in a pc game?

Using this technique would work for a video game, even if the verts are not welded you could attach everything together as one object and rig as one piece…or rig some sections on their own and yes, cinema 4D can do this, as long as it can export a format that supports vertex weight and is compatible with the game engine you choose.

I am going to start mapping out my drawings to see how I can place the textures in 3d and start designing directly from it.

is it easy to design directly from the texture what technique should be employed? because sometimes I noticed that the vertices’s stretch the texture how do I avoid that?

By tweaking the UV shells, simply freezing uv borders and using relax. Of course stretching will happen if you make the plane changes too extreme.
