3 Sided Patching Problem

#1

I am experiencing difficulty in reliably placing the apex of the patched group of polygons on a 3-sided patch.

In LW, it was done simply by the order in which you selected the curves. Anyone have any ideas as to why this seems difficult in Modo? It seems to work sometimes - other times it does not.

This one particular area, I can’t for the life of me get the polys to converge at the top of the hat (green arrow) and flow down from there - basically the area denoted by the red circle needs to be placed where the green arrow is pointing.

I had to import it into LW to finish it.

any ideas?

OK I keep waiting for some one to post something useful to this thread. I have tested this out and I get the same results. Actualy, before I read this thread i didn’t even know there was a patch tool. But I can get the converging corner of the three sided patch to be at two of the three corners but can not predict or get it to be in the third corner.

helo Atomman, yeah i agree with u, for the first time, it looked so creepy and frustrating that u can’t swap the corner. but here we go.
actually when u do the 3 splines cage patching in modo using the patch tool, u’ll c the inteactive blue nodes, when u start selecting them by order, they change colors to yellow, forming the patched surface. now what u r doing is undo the last step and u try to change the order, but unluckly, same result. that’s cause the old selection is still activated.

the solution is, after u done ur patched surface, and if u don’t liked it, u can undo, or in the propertie tool, u can uncheck freeze, now, press esc once, so the patch tool selection nodes is reseted, now change the order of ur knotes selection. that’s it, so simple.
yeah, i suggest to c a button or option inside patch tool, that will swap the patch order, without going undo reselect and define, just swap .
i hope this help
keep dreaming

hey vuedesprit,

this is actually something that I tried - it worked on the first one, but not the second

here are the 3 curves that it does not work on.

cheers,

hey atomman, yeah u r right the wires u sent behave weird in modo, but it’s not ur fault or modo fault, it’s the whole spline system and presentation in modo, the one i don’t like too much and i request a lot of simple things for spline to b integrated.
anyway, man the problem is ur splines direction, there was for sure some splines that share the same direction, so u have to make the 3 directed clockwise or counterclockwise, the problem is that modo unlike lightwave don’t show u the direction of ur spline, as lightwave give u a small node on the tip of the spline (wich is very usefull and a good indication) and without this one u can’t guess.
as one of the most freaking behaviors is that when i draw a spline in the top view, the first vertex is on the ground , but all next vertex r on a certain level in y direction beyond the ground.
now here is the file in it’s good shape, u can test it man, and let’s pray and hope that lux guys will hear and c those comments and feedback.
i really want to c a good, working tools , and new thoughts in modeling in a upgrade for modo, b4 jumping to a next animation or rendering module.
