3 easy questions about Modo compatibility...

#1

Hello “Modo guys”
I’m very impressed about the potentiality of Modo and its futures and its friendly interface and all the excited good comments from enthusiasts users.
I’ve never tried to use it but lookin at the screen shoots and at your WIPs it looks great!
Lookin at Modo from outside it looks like (shame on me if I say any bullshit :stuck_out_tongue: ) that it has all the tools from modelers like Rhino joined with all the best features from LightWave Modeler, but faster … am I right?

Unfortunately I’m a linux user (gentoo distro) so here there’s my second question:
_ will it be a linux version of Modo?
it’s a pity that very few 3d programs think about linux :banghead: … right now the only that are developed for linux are Maya (that’s too €€€€) and XSI (never gave an interested look at it), I think that if something like Modo will be developed for linux, it could get a BIG part of market … anyway these are only my assumptions!!

and now the third and last question:
_ is it possible to run Modo under linux? Has anyone tried to do it?
maybe using ‘Cedega’ a commercial product (from the creators of ‘wine’: win emulator) that supports opengl and direct3d.

I’d like to recive all positive reply  … that surely will be an input for makin me buy and try it! … but obviously if the Lux crew wanna give me a free copy for testing it under linux  … well :D, it’s wellcome :stuck_out_tongue: hehehe

Thanks to all of you!

Cheers!

Have a search around. There’s been previous threads about this. I think it would be technically feasible to port the Nexus underpinnings to Linux. Once Nexus is ported, then that’s most of the work done to get Modo to Linux.

I think Lux is currently busy getting their Mac / Windows products out the door. I don’t think they’d think about a Linux port before the renderer is released for Mac OS X and Windows.

Announcements will be made soon concerning this topic… stay tuned

#4

Hmm… things are sure getting interesting in modo land!

#5

Tnx all mates … I’m waiting for the announcement!!

Cheers!

Announcements soon! Hey, that’s really exciting!!!

Windows is “on the nose” in the film business. Many production houses want to stay with a UNIX derived system, such as Linux or OS X. One of the many reasons for this is that many of them already have a lot of UNIX based software.

Even if there are less unit-sales with Linux, it will give Luxology a foothold in major film production, which brings kudos and generates extra sales in the other platforms.

Wow. This sounds like Luxology really will go Linux. Think about the ramifications. They have this Nexus framework, like a “3D operating system”, so people can write a graphics oriented application and it’ll run on OS X, Windows and Linux. Write once, run anywhere.

Nobody else in the business can do this. No wonder Luxology said that Nexus was their greatest asset.

hehe…
i have a stupid analysis… if you wish to waste 30 seconds of your life:

it’s all about targeting the market, the right customer.
after all, luxology is also looking for a good profitable margin.
dont forget guys, this is a commercial product, you have to pay for it to to use it.
maybe, from a luxology perspective, windows and mac OS users are more likely to afford the price of a Modo, than a poor linux user who’s using a free mandrake distro.
Second, windows and Mac OS make the largest piece of cake in computer users. that’s why they’re always a priority in computer and software industry.

Well well Smalls … I dont agree very much with your analysis, (again 30 sec of your time):

you are right that: it’s all about targeting the market but you even have to consider that linux is a new market, and not everything for linux is free.
Most of the linux distros are free (as many of the OS X are!) but not ALL the programs for linux are free. One exemple for all: Alias Maya … well it’s: €7349 ($6999) … I think that Alias dudes are quite happy to earn that much from a “poor” linux user, and I think that earnin that much would be good from a Luxology perspective too!
In the end I think that developing something good for a platform solid and stable (and fast!!!) as linux could be good for all, both for the plp that trust in unix based OS and for companies that (even developing for win and mac) want to “risk” on a almost new growing market.

Anyway that’s accordin to me, obviously I dont think everyone agrees with what I said!

Cheers!

I hope you’re not insinuating that linux users are cheapscates :D, I run maya on linux (slackware, which you can d/l for free, I bought it to support Patrick since he’s doing such a good job) it gets under my skin to fork out exhorbidant amounts of cash on a sorry ass OS like windows XP ( does that stand for “experimental” :applause:, and their 64 bit version is in beta and wont be available 2 years or some horse poop, now there’s a developer with their finger on the pulse of the industry…NOT), wings 3D is an outstanding little app and that runs great on lunux, nevercentre are in the process of porting silo to linux, and as soon as that comes out I will be adding that to my little arsenal.Waiting for the “luxology” announcement with baited breath, all I want from an OS is speed and performance and imho windows is just a let down, just my rant:applause:

Cheers guys

“and XSI (never gave an interested look at it)”

Without trying to sound too insulting I think that is a bit of a mistake.
XSI has great poly tools and excellent subdivision implementation.
My only gripe is that it doesn’t run on OSX. Otherwise I would be using that for everything… and you cant beat the rendering abilities!
So if you can get a chance to have a good look at XSI, I would highly recommend it.

Having said that. Modo’s ease of use in un-paralleled.

ADDA
