2D Game (Need Assistance for beginners)

#1

Hello to all the Members of this great Wonderfull Forum :)…
Well this is kinda a Multipart Question(s) … LOL

Well i’ve just met with about 8 New people and each one is an Einstein in his Field  LOL
they all showed reall effort and hope to start and make a good teamwork to develop a Game …
4 are Programmers(2 VB6 + 2 VC) … (Donnow still how we will Collaborate  )
and there are 3 GFX designers which one is an Artist.
and there is a TeamLeader and analyser and finally a Markter … or Financial Leader…

the Main Idea isn’t getting money out of this … it’s Just the fun and to learn to be a Team and it may lead to a very professional Team in the end … or that is how i hope it’ll be LOL

Style of the Game:
It’ll be a 2d Game but it can include 3d effects/Backgrounds they way it makes it feel it is 3d.
there are several games i’ll mention and im sure all of you will know the Idea of the Game:
Abby’s Oddos world(Hope i spelled it right :stuck_out_tongue: ) (Mostly)
Vikings 2 (kinda)
Metal Slug (kinda)
Hercules (kinda)

so i think you know now how the style of the game will be:
it’ll be a simple Adventure “2D” Game .

so i have some Questions regarding the development of the game:
1- is there a Usefull 2D “FREE” engine we could use and would be usefull ?
2- how we will collaborate as programmers because we have 2 VB and 2 VC/ C
I know all of you will start to say C/C++ noway VB  … but i think the two VB programmers are very Professional and they can handle the Disadvantages of VB easily specially the game isn’t any 3D Modelling involved.
3- Any resources or Information i can get to guide us then please let us Know.

Thank you very much in Advantage !!

You would probably do better to ask this on a programming forum, such as http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/ . Good luck!

1 - Why not just create your own 2D engine? Decide what rendering technology you want to use and then go for it. It would be better for your programmers in the long run because they will be familar with the drawing routines etc. Not to mention that you can design the engine to work with your “media” specs and tailor make it to your needs.

    • There are several ways to do this, if you have VB (old VB) programmers pre .NET then I would suggest the use of .dll files - or - Using .Net you can have the project under one solution without worrying what language it’s being coded in, because it all compiles down to the same byte code in the end.
Thats one of the main features of .NET, but your VB guys will have to switch over to VB.NET which is whole other beast.
    • The best resource is a book or book(s) and at least one person on your team that knows what the heck they are doing.

Good luck,

Thank you Flipped_Normal/Kid Mesh for your Help here
we won’t work with the Dot Net Environment because it’s Limited to Win2000/NT/XP Only so users on Win98/Me will not be able to run the game.

yes we will use some DLLs provided by the coders who will work in C++
about the 2d Engine i know it’s the best way to build our own Engine…
but since we are new to this i was thinking of working or playing arround with an Existing 2D Engine so we can build our’s …
i know it’s not that hard but there are some things we don’t know yet like the Map structure and the Collision Detection … and other things we should learn first …

Do you suggest an Online Tutorial somewhere which covers those entire parts for beginners ?
I think the site given by Flipped_Normal is quite good.
Thank you very Much
