2010: portal lights + physical sky = huge noise

#1

When i use portal lights and physical sky it’s almost impossible to get rid of the noise. And i mean big chunky noise. Setting area samples VERY high (512x512) doesn’t make any difference compared to standard 4x4, except or the places where the noise is small. The only thing that makes a difference in big noise areas is setting antialiasing from 0/2 to 2/2 or 2/4. When i get rid of physical sky i get completely clean renders with 0/2 and area samples on 4x4. What is the reason for this? I’m using physical sky in the global environment, photographic exposure and portal lights. Any ideas?

hmmm… i get perfectly nice images without tons of noise with decent settings on the portal lights.

How big is your scene, it might be just a scale issue?

Could you post an image and settings? or share the scene??

cheers,

Are there some mia_material with glossy reflection? Or refraction (even without blurry refraction)?
Ambient occlusion?

There’s -the- mia_material node. You can set that up the way you want.
For tips, tricks and settings read the PDF that comes with softimage, or get it from the Mental Ray website here:
http://www.mentalimages.com/fileadmin/user_upload/PDF/arch_and_design.pdf
It’s a good, thorough read.

Also, there’s a toolbar with mia presets to be found here:
http://www.rowu-media.nl/content/web/tutsportal.html
Be sure to follow the xsibase link for instructions to get the toolbar working.

Hey, sorry i was traveling and i didn’t have access to the internet. It’s not related to scene size, although it changes with the sizes of portal lights related to the scene. Neverteless the noise remains - it’s simply further away when the portals are smaller. I’ll post the scene as soon as i find it;]
