2.5D "Old Gothic Archway" -inkl. Breakdown

#1

Hey,

With a bit of a weakness for gothic architecture and inspired by your great entries to the NHM challenge I decided to make a picture of a gothic archway I’ve found into a 2.5d mattepainting. My goal was to get a bit deeper into 2.5D, try something “interior” and to play a bit with different ways of creating foliage and ivy etc. I didn’t want to make it too old and destroyed though, more “rather recently abandoned” and now “sleepy” and calm.

I posted screenshots of various stages below, please feel free to ask any questions.
Tools used were Photoshop, Aftereffects, Maya, Mental Ray and the “ivy generator”.

Hi paul-baaske,

great work you made there, i like it very much.
I can see your MP in a movie…( in my mind  with some real footage people walking along the Hallway.

Only thing that disturbes me a little is the unsharp wood piece in the front right.
Somehow it gives my eye a break while following the Hallway to the door.

But besides that, great work!

Very nice! my only crit would be the shadow on the bottom right is a flat color, and looks a bit odd that none of the wall texture is seen in that shadow.

the vine or root in the bottom right could also have its highlights knocked down a bit, but no biggie.

sweet matte.
