2.5 is slow for me

#1

I’m not sure what it is (since some days it works other it doesn’t) but there are times that 2.5 sucks down my CPU.

2.36-2.49 have always run smoothly on my comp and I could have 3mil+ polys before it slows down or crashes , my current project is just 500K+/- and it rotates slowly and can some times take 30-40 secs to switch from edit to object mode. I do have a subsurf on my model and when I change the number viewed it can take 2-5 minutes, 2.49 is near instant still. But as I said earlier some days 2.5 works just fine (though I have never been able to go above lvl 2 subsurf with out a crash though I can go to lvl 4 on the same model in 2.49)

I’ve also notice that renders take longer as well

I have experienced similar problems. Edition and Sculp are fast but switching much slower than 2.49. The only reason I can think of is vertex array or so as they have to be prepared. They speedup viewport performance but probably need some time to generate. Don’t know of any solutions.

there is still alot to come into the main branch in blender 2.5 such as n-gons, this will make dramatic changes to how mesh data is used, and all the new operations around this are being put into the n-gons code so you will need to wait before any speed up.

You might try enabling VBO in your preferences and see if that makes a difference.

I’m not an expert with Blender but, as far as I can say, I also find poor response to any kind of editing both in the interface (dragging in the numeric fields, for instance) and trying to edit simple objects, both in object and editing mode (simply trying to drag a vertex in a default sphere gives me a delayed response to the mouse). I have installed 2.49, 2.5 alpha 1 and 2.5 alpha 2, and alpha 2 goes slower than 1 and 1 slower than 2.49 (in fact, performance in 2.49 is fairly good). Though I know this is probably logical, as this is just an alpha release, what I find strange is that performance is better in alpha 1 rather than in alpha 2.

I also found some buggy behaviour with the grease pencil in alpha 2 that I was not able to replicate (Grease pencil started to paint even when I did’t click on the viewport).

Of course I should say that my graphic card is really, really crappy. I just have an nVidia GeForce 7050 / nVidia nForce 610i. Maybe this is the real problem :D.
