Hi all
I have some CG rendered footage in 1280x720 and 1024x576 using square pixel. I need to cut this to PAL 16:9 as it will be exclusively displayed on a plasma using a DVD player.
What is the general workflow as It seems 720x576 in 16:9 is what I need to aim for?
Will I lose any detail?

The general workflow is to use the PAL 16:9 preset for your output, load your footage into the non-linear editor called the Video Sequence Editor, enable Do Sequence, and render it back out. Then master that onto a DVD with a menu/DVD burner.
You will lose detail because you are compressing 1280 pixels into 720 horizontally, but will be presenting as much detail as is possible using that medium.
Alternatively, master an HD or Blu-Ray 
16.9 PAL is doable. Use 720*576 with a (!important!) 1.42 pixel aspect.

Of course you will. It’s less than half of the resolution.

Using Final Cut by Apple and it outputs great to PAL 16:9, it’s a lower resolution format but all the detail is still there (no cropping is what I was worried about) and the down sampling fixes some ever so slight pixel shimmer on a grass field which is a plus.

That’s what counts: it looks good. Or maybe, just that it looks good enough.
When we do stuff in nice, sharp square pixels on our uber-resolution computer monitors it’s terribly easy to forget PAL or NTSC … even though that is how thousands of people will actually view our work. (And it would not be so bad if the pixels on a television screen were actually square.)
I guess that’s why they had little, tinny speakers in the control rooms at Abbey Road. They knew that, in the end, their paying customers would be listening to their stuff on AM in their Plymouths. :surprised
