Hi
I loved the lighting and colors in the Zootopia movie.
I was wondering if there’s a name for that glowy type light effect which is all over the movie.mainly in the backgrounds.
And technically how is it achieved?
Thank you.

no need to search for hyperion or xyz , use what ever render engine you use now. Its about good lighting and good exposure not a particular render engine. Then the effect you are referring is probably a mix of bloom and glow done in post.
Yes you can definitely enhance your lighting in post (compositing). Adding subtle glows and other color operations. But you’ll want to start with “good lighting” before doing a lot of manipulation in comp, it’ll be easier, rather than hack the lighting to “make it work” while doing comp (although if you are doing all yourself, you can also manipulate exposure and light colors in comp). So try to spend good time planning the lighting for your shots.
Something that might also help you on the lighting side is to do a bit of research on “volumetric” lights and also “atmospheric fog” rendering that additionally to your beauty can help you to enrich your final image once comped together.
Do a bit of research on lighting passes, aovs and light groups. The more information you render, the more you will be able to play in comp.
Additionally, you might want to take a look at another thread on this section (lighting & shaders…)
“how to lighting animation like pixar and disney” … I put some links on some books that will help you getting a better understanting of lighting.

Thank you , Manuel for very informative response. I’ll certainly take a look at the things you mentioned. Thanks!
the name of the effect you are looking for is called ‘cheap gay 70ies porn glow’.
you can achieve it by duplicating your layer and gaussian blur screen it by 15%. it will guarantee to make your work look really cheap and shit!
good luck.
