Zeus Sculpture

#1

Hey everyone! I try to create a model based on Zeus Head Statue. It was pretty hard to create a model based on real life sculpture but i must say the real challenge is sculpting the hair. C&C are appreciated.

Good start! Sculpting hair is definitely a challenge! The trick (as is with any subject, really) is to break the shape up into 3 phases of detail: Primary, Secondary, and tertiary. You started off with a good primary shape, but then you sorta combined the last two steps by sculpting different sized rows from base to tip, which you want to avoid unless you’re going for cornrows. :stuck_out_tongue:

A good strategy for nailing the secondary shapes is to blur your hair reference images. This forces you to see the bigger shapes without being overwhelmed by the detail.

Once you have that down and you’re ready for the fine detail, be methodical. You’re not going to sculpt every hair, so slow down at this point. Here you want to suggest smaller, layered groups of hair that overlap each other.

I attached a quick example of what I’m talking about. Notice how the secondary shapes don’t just look like wavy rows, and the tertiary lines terminate into each other very quickly? Now I could keep going and really dial this in as this was just a couple minutes work, but it goes to show how following a few simple rules can quickly net you results.

Thank you very much for your advice! I think i kinda messed up on the tertiary phase. I have pretty good secondary shape but the tertiary shape effect the secondary. I will remember it and try to fix it in the future. Thanks!
