Zbrush vs Modo ---> for a XSI user

#1

I have downloaded MODO and I was wondering if you think it is a better modeling programm than ZBrush… I am a Zbrush user and I am still searching for alternatives to modeling especially low-polygon and mechanical modelling where Zbrush is not that good. As far as organic modeling I can say that I am very pleased with ZBrush… So what do you think?

PS: Do you Know of any free tutorial or video tutorial for learning the basics of MODO? Thanks!!

Well, zbrush and Modo are really uncomparable in their current forms. Everything that can be modeled in Modo can be done in XSI… there are some tool differences, and in some respects Modo may have some minor modeling workflow improvements (depending on your perspective)… but unless you really need some feature in the current Modo modeling set, imho I can’t see a reason to use it (201 may change that… we’ll see).

zbrush on the other hand is a completely different type of tool than either XSI or Modo… other than point-by-point going through the differing concept and uses, it’s hard to explain… but for that the zbrush forums would better suit.

I just recently spent a lot of time modeling in XSI and in my opinion is that it’s every bit as good as Modo. I learned modeling in LightWave years back and when Modo came out I downloaded the demo and gave it a spin. Ok, they definitely one upped LightWave in some areas like n-gons and edges but com’mon… How many LightWaves do we need? But seriously, there just isn’t enough originality in there that isn’t already in LightWave. And don’t get me stated on the price! Give me a break! For that much it had better do a whole hell of a lot more then Silo (and it doesn’t) and then some.

Seriously, For Low-poly and mechanical modeling you’re already using the right program. XSI has progressed on all fronts recently and modeling is one of it’s strong points in my opinion. Can anyone think of anything that Modo can do that XSI can’t? My advise is that if you really can’t stand modeling in XSI check out Silo. It’s one of the only programs that I’ve seen that is consistently innovating.

[phewf! went off there… Sorry]

Actually I agree with you.XSI modeling is fine and yes I prefer it to 3d Studio MAX and when it comes to organic modeling Zbrush is the only choice. However I really wanted to give modo/hexagon/silo a go conserning low-polys. Do you know any video tutorials for either of them.

Hey, both SModo and Silo have tutorials on there sites.

I think you should stick with Xsi and zbrush. Modo benefits me more being 3ds max user, after using modo now I know how bad max is. Zbrush is great for organics so if you wanna do mechanical stuff you will have to use Xsi or modo. I think you should should compare Modo with Xsi, Maya or lightwave not zbrush, Zbrush is in my opinion a sculpting tool.

Thank you all for your replies. I decided to invest time only on ZBrush and XSI and I think they are more than capable and easy to use programs. There is no reason to jam my computer with programms which I do not know how to use them efficiently. Less is more!!!

congrats on your decision.

ill back up modo by saying that it is very easy to use and learn, and it’s toolset is powerful and intuitive. with 201, the new update thats coming soon, youll be able to paint on the models with multiple layers and use blending modes a la photoshop. it will also have a physical based rendering system that you can use and it is very fast from what i’ve seen.

I am certainly interested in what Modo 201 brings to the table… now with _pho’s constant improvement of his Modo–>XSI plugin… it is growing more interesting each day.

Looking forward to seeing Lux’s release soon.
