Zbrush displacement results looks fine....until I hit APPLY DISPMAP......why?


When I import my displacement map from mari into Zbrush, my map looks fine.
However, when I hit “Apply DispMap”, it all goes to hell. (see image)
Strangely, I get this a lot but not so bad. In the past, it would be slightly more intense and I would just adjust the level on a layer. But this is ridiculous .

What the hell am I doing wrong?
