Z-Brush acting slow despite optimization?

#1

Hello everyone! Im starting to notice some lag in z-brush and i don’t know what causes it.

I have a 3.30 ghz processor and 8gb ram but it still lags at around 470 000 polys. From what i gather it should not even lag at 5- 10 millions of polygons if you have 64 bit system and multi quad processor but i guess i could be wrong?

Iv’e given z brush the max amount of memory at the compact mem settings and iv’e also done the multithread performance optimization with minor improvement.

Do you know of something iv’e missed?

Cheers!

That is strange. Even on a 5-yo system ZB should run great up to a few million due to it’s excellent memory optimisation.

Are you running 4R7 64-bit? As this is the first version(beta) of ZB that is 64-bit.

Have you tried with different .ztl/meshes/.obj? Maybe a reinstall?

Hello Musashidan! Thank you for your quick reply. Im running Z-brush 4-R7 64-bit. The project im working on is a “standard” mesh from z-brush that iv’e altered in maya and then imported back again to z-brush.

Worth noting is that when i bring the updated mesh back into maya it becomes very large?

Iv’e tried reinstalling the program to no effect

Thanks again for your response!

How does the 32 bit version perform? Does it suffer the same performance problems?

#5

Hello AJ, Yes the “standard” version of Z-brush performs the same, if a little slower. There is this little delay to every brush stroke :/.

#6

Are you using a tablet? Does it still lag if you use the mouse?

#7

Im using my mouse, I have not tried with my tablet yet.

#8

Damn. I was hoping it might be one of the tablet pc settings interfering. I think you’ll need to get in touch with Pixologic about this one.

#9

Ah okey, damn…

Thanks anyway though! I hope there is a solution :/.

I just thought of something. Make sure you havn’t accidentally enabled ‘dynamic subdivision’, as this will make ZB brush engine lag if activated on a high-poly mesh.

#11

Ah good tip! The problem actually dissapeared by itself kind of, but i deactivated dynamic subdivision anyway. Thanks!

I have another problem right now where z brush reverts to an older version of the sculpt randomly for some reason. It’s not that i click on the history “tabs” either, the problem occurs on a much never version of the sculpt than the one loaded.

Any idea about this one?

Are you saving your work as a ztool or a zproject? Could be something to do with saving the undo buffer along with the project. I havn’t experienced that myself, but ZB does have several weird bugs. Are you running the latest version: patch 3?

#13

Im saving my work as a Z-Project, i also have it saved as a Z-tool but i found it better to save it as a project as it saves my view and selection etc as well. But then i get theese wierd errors like this one: Wierd Mesh

I was doing fingernails on a hand i was sculpting and suddenly it reverted to an older version of the hands were the fingers were a bit longer but as you can see the nails remained on the fingers.

Im running z brush 4r7.

Could you have inadvertently stored/switched between morph targets?

I realise you’re using R7 but have you updated to the latest patch, P3?

Make sure your computer system is 100% working properly, meaning, ensure your video drivers are all installed, update your bios, defrag your hard drives etc, then if the problem persists, I’d recommend a clean install of Zbrush and ensure that the hdd it’s installed on has plenty of additional space.
