Just curious as to what hotkeys cgtalkers have found most efficient in their creation process. You have customized them right ?
Your Hotkeys
before i list mine. let me just say i’m really glad we have this forum. i never really felt comportable posting here before.
anyway. here is my layout. if i actually typed it out it would look weird since i use dvorak but i will give you the qwerty equivalents
camera controlls
q: view along -x
Q: view along x
w: view along y
W: view along -y
e: view along z
E: view along -z
f: aim
mesh controlls
a: move along x
s: move along y
d: move along z
A: disolve
S: connect/bridge
D:collapse
Z:edge loop
X:edge ring
C:tweak
selection modes
z: vertex
x: edge
c: face
this works really well for me because i can keep my hand at the same spot on the keyboard.
I’m really curious what other people use. sorry if this is more in depth than you were thinking for this thread.
qwer - move
asdf - rotate
zxcv - scale
f1,f2,f3,f4 - vertex, edge, face, object
numpad:
7- top view
1- front view
3- right view
5- persp
(+ctrl for opposite)

m = virtual mirror
, = virtual mirror break
. = virtual mirror freeze
t = tweak
Default everything else.
For other Wings forums, this is Scott-dawg by the way.
I only use a few commands when I model, so I don’t have millions of hotkeys…yet :rolleyes:
Also, all of my hotkeys are pretty arbitrary. There isn’t really any order to it at all. Just whatever popped into my head when I was doing it.
Most used command: Move:Free in all modes is F
Second: Connect, left at C
Third: Virtual Mirror, hotkeyed at V, Break is B, Freeze in N
Wings rules hardcore, like righteous dominion, forever :buttrock:
here’s my present setup, that i copied/customized from a post on Cgchat, month ago, and that is eased by the fact that on french keyboard undo/redo is done on w key (so the z key is free for axis) :
move X : ctrl + x
move Y : ctrl + y
move Z : ctrl + z
move normal : ctrl + n
move free : ctrl + f
this for all elements (vertex, edge etc.)
rotate X : ctrl + shift + x
etc…
scale X : ctrl + alt + x
etc…
extrude region X : shift + alt + x
etc…
virtual mirror on F1, F2, F3
next/previous loop on F4, F5 (directly from cookepuss)
and i tend to use the alt key for plugins and special comands, such as :
alt + b bridge
alt + i inset
etc…
Might seem very complicated, but i preferred to go for a logic setting (modifier tells the action, key the first letter of the direction), so i dont have to really learn them.
Also i’ve relatively big hands and have been playing Counter and analog games a bit, so alt + ctrl + y (for example) is doable fast. Well, i still have to look at my hand, but is still faster than going through menus.
Here are some that I was using a while back. I am just now getting back into Wings and may be re-thinking some of these.
anyway- If you are familiar with LightWave, some of these may make some sense.
H = Scale (uniform)
H+Shift = Inflate (vertex only)
H+Ctrl = Tighten (vertex/body only)
[edit] You may need Wasamonkey’s noTurnEdge for this to work. See his post below
T = Move (free)
T+Shift = Move (normal)
T+Ctrl = Tweak
U = Undo
U+Shift = Redo
Tab+Shift = Smooth shaded preview.
Tab+Ctrl = Show/Hide Edges
F1 = 1 light / 2 lights
F1+Alt = Scene Lights
F2 = Center All
F2+Shift = Align All (center)
F9 = Vmir Create
F10 = Vmir Break
F11 = Vmir Freeze
F12 = Flatten (normal)
] = Show/Unlock All
[ = Lock Unselected
; = Hide Selected
= Hide UnSelected
[+ALT = Store Selection
]+ALT = Recall Selection
]+ALT+Shift = Exchange Selection
0(ukey) = Align to Selection
0(ukey)+Ctrl+Alt+Shift = Auto Rotate
I don’t have that many hot keys, although I have become accustomed to some of the default ones. Also, I think this is a really good thread, its good to see how others work and people may even find some keys they really like.

I used to have a bunh more hot keys on numpad for selections but with the new setup they are not as fast
and also had hide and lock on numpad keys as well
the rest of my keys are default
and I use a modified turnedge plugin so I can use T and shift + T
this is all I currently use anymore
the rest I use so infrequently that the menus are faster than trying to remember a hotkey
if anyone wants to use this setup you will need the turnedge file I edited some time back, it still works with current release
http://www.geocities.com/ngearhead/wingspics/noTurnedge97.zip
this file is also good if you dont do low res models and want to assign a command to T and shift T
