Err…why the need to put a “wtf?” in your post? It seems out of context.
Anyhow, I never heard of World Machine before. I just downloaded the basic edition to give it a whirl. I’m getting Vue 5 Infinite in a couple of days as part of my LW [9] upgrade deal so it’ll be interesting to compare the two apps. I’ll also be keeping an eye on the pricing for WM Pro.
[Edit: After a 30 minute play with WM] Wow! This is pretty slick little app. I would even go as far as calling it a “Bryce-killer” for it’s simplicity yet it’s fairly powerful. No rendering but still seems to be a useful program. I’ll be playing with WM a lot more. Can’t wait to try Vue as well!
Wow impressive coding skills, having just played for 5 mins it looks damn impressive. Will have to play tomorrow and see if something useful can be done with this basic edition…
You can´t compare Worldmachine to Terragen, it´s not a rendering application.
But Worldmachine is for sure one of the best terrain editors available. Even with the private version you can do very nice stuff, but the standard edition offers much more possibilities.
I really can recommend to take a look athis app!
best,
Walli
Very impressive - espesially for a 1.0 release.
Now if I could only find a use for it other than just messing around.
Because he probably figured most people would see world machine and think wtf is that.
It’s got a long way to run to overtake Bryce. A LONG way.
If this kind of programs turns you on, you’re better off trying Mojoworld.
World Machine is a fantastic app. I love using it. Too bad Vue is not nearly as good as it could have been. Be prepared for lots of frustrating nights. World Machine, however, is a pleasure to use and generates some of the best maps for terrain I’ve seen.
It looks exactly like this:

Except its a standalone app.

…but it´s the other way around, World Machine has been out for several years now.
I know. DPIT is a actually a tree and vegetation generation plug similar to Xfrog that’s been around for a while, with features like wind/grass animation, rendertime instancing and so forth. The procedural landscaping stuff is just an add-on feature in DPIT 3. Its not really what the plug as a whole is focused on.
What’s important to remember is that World Machine is a terrain height map generation program. It is NOT a Bryce/Vue/World Builder type program and as such shouldn’t be compared to them. I’ve tried out many programs dedicated to this type of nature generation, and have yet to come across one that offers the same power in terrain generation that World Machine does. The level of control is amazing, especially if you’re into the whole node based thing <3 <3
Agreed.
I’ve played a bit with it and it can do lots.
OTOH, it doesn’t have the painting on Terrain Canvas with an immediate 3D preview that Bryce has, so I doubt it will replace Bryce in a hurry.
OTTH, I exported one 16-bit heightmap at 512 (the max terrain resolution for the Basic version) and it arrived into Bryce very weird. I don’t know whether Bryce is very sensitive or World Machine does something to the bitmaps, but the terrain was all covered in spikes at Bryce resolution of 512. 8-bit version was okay, just as 16-bit was okay in Cinema. Yes, I had imported 16-bit TIFFs into Bryce without any such problem.
BTW, really, if you’re into node-based editing, Mojoworld is much more powerful than World Machine, plus it has file import, rendering, atmosphere, water, materials, lights and so on. The price is much higher, though. $149 for SE.
It seems there is some confusion about WM’s purpose. It is purely a terrain heightfield generator. It does not render.
I’m going to jump on the this>that argument by stating one has only to look at the terrains generated with WM as compared to other programs to see that in the hands of an experienced world builder, it has no equal.
Mojoworld is the only app that even comes close, maybe even VUE, but to be frank, I’ve tried both and I don’t really believe they have the potential that WM does. Which is not to say that they don’t do what they do well. Plus, WM’s erosion is untouchable.
Once you get the hang of wiring different devices together and using masks, modulations and selectors to control the strength and distribution of the devices in the workflow the power of WM steps up a notch.
I’ve been using the standard edition for six months now.
And I’m just really a novice with it-

That’s what a new user can do with it. Check out Eoin at Renderosity. Most terrains made in WM.
