WooHoo Wings At Work Now.. =)

#1

Heyas everyone.
It’s been a dream of mine for sometime now that I get Wings3D installed where I work. ( I don’t 3D model as a job ).

Well today I figured out how to do it… (getting past my user permissions on the network that is).

I’m a lightwave guy… and I love that app. But I think constantly modeling in Wings at work here will be good for me to increase my skills. (And fall in love with edge control).

Just a couple questions…

  1. What is the preferred method for getting you models from Wings to Lightwave? — OBJ format ?

  2. When I select a couple points, edges or faces in a straight line and I want to select in that straight lines all around the model is there a hotkey or tool I can use to do it? – (Bandsaw select for you lightwavers).

Lovin Wings so far… and the comunity looks great too! — I’m very excited to start using it everyday…

I don’t know anything about lightwave but to select an edge loop just select an edge and hit “L” on the keyboard…

Good to see you here Minus

  1. Yeah. I use obj getting stuff from Wings to LightWave. The FBX plug-in is another option that works well. You don’t have to have MotionBuilder. Just get the fbx plug for Wings and LW.

  2. Lots of options here
Select an edge and hit “L” to select the edge loop.
Select an edge and hit “ALT+L” to grow the edge step by step toward the loop.
Select an edge and hit “G” to select an edge ring.
((also see SELECT | EDGE LOOP for more options))

edit: oops… Tunames beat me to #2

Edge-loops select gets a whoa from me. :scream:
Very nice.
I will check out the FBX plugins too… that’s a good idea…

Also, if you have a face selection - pressing L will return the perimeter / boundary edge loop of that selection. (and shift + L gets the face selection back)

Since this works - irrespective of whether you have a ‘proper’ edgeloop or not - it can be (very) useful sometimes - imo

Minus.
Looks like we’re in the same boat, where I work the permissions are locked down tighter than a duck’s *ss. Luckily I’m an “expert user”, it’s meant to be for my Autocad work, but somehow Wings3D found it’s way onto my machine

Gotta love the way that you can switch selection modes and the selection changes to take this into acount (select a quad face, switch to vertex mode and the 4 corner points are selected).
