Yes, you’ll learn a lot from studying the masters. If you have time you should join the DSF as well. The given theme (pushes you out of the comfy zone) and the time limit (forces you to focus on the essentials and main shapes above details) make it a really good - and very fun - practice

Study masters and life, apply to your own work - two sides of learning that really complement each other.

cheers mindbendermind, took me a while to figure out what dsf was! . Ill check it out!

heres some rough sketches for a uni project

#8

These didn’t turn out so great was getting late so didn’t give them enough attention. Gunna try again tomorrow…

#9

heres todays sketch took around 2 -3 hours, was good practice even though the eyes are wonky and rendering needs work :hmm:

#10

Heres some quick artsyposes sketches, my eyes are a little tired as ive been doing other projects today, so I think i might start the master bust drawing but finish the rest tomorrow… :surprised

#11

I’ve started the bust but im gunna take it easy for the rest of the night and finish it up tomorrow. Heres where im up to, blocked in the values, needs tidying up then gunna add key details, found its a lot harder doing these studies on the wacom then it is on paper

#12

tidied it up a little but its taking me far longer than it should and my other work needs starting so gunna leave this one as it is for now. Will practice more quick wacom sketches this evening…

#13

Some more quick sketches from artsy poses, was tired but didnt wanna give up todays practice…

#14

nice job on the gestures have tried just doing the fundamentals it really helps out in the long run

#15

Great job, I’m also at some similiar track so good luck to us all…:D:D

hey, thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately my internet was down for quite a while so I couldn’t post regularly. I’ve been practicing using Andrew Loomis’s book on studying the head in the mean-time, and I feel like I’ve made a bit of progress!

I’ve also been busy with uni projects which I will post soon.

Other than that its easter break so it means lots of sketching and hopefully bbq’s

heres just a made up drawing of a landscape, I think I had drawn this after being inspired from one of Feng Zhu’s tutorial videos…

#18

heres todays digital practice, reference from artsy poses. Each sketch was 5-10 mins.

I think I may continue doing the master heads study, although what I’ve been realizing as of late is that unless knowledge of proportion, size and perspective is not known then copying a picture without knowing any of those is merely just making your skill of 2d observation and rendering better.

I think to actually truly be better would be to understand the form/proportion, size/perspective. I’m having trouble finding ways of studying these, I think the only way would be to draw from life and to study measurement of forms. I dont think you can really understand this very well from photographs…

In terms of perspective I’m currently brushing up on my perspective skills. I’m going through “basic perspective drawing, a visual approach, 3rd ed, John Montague” im sure there are plenty of other great books but this one is working for me so far…

enough rambling heres some pics,

Some more reference drawing from artsyposes.com, i was really trying to get the skeleton and form right with these. Also id reccomend the tutorials on alienthink.com its been helpful so far worth checking out.

some stuff from the sketchbook

#21

Nice effort so far! I think you might need to pay a little more attention to the perspective / placement of the feet in a few of your drawings. If they aren’t drawn properly, the figures tend to look like they’re floating^^;

#22

Noted! I think i’ll try and put some shadows underneath the figures from now on and spend a little more time making sure I get those feet looking right! Just read through your blog, 12 hours a everyday will be incredibly hard good luck!
