Hi,
Does anybody here know how to make some realistic wood knots in photoshop or is it better to take a real wood knot from a picture and photo-manipulate it until it looks right?

It really depends on the style you’re going for. If you’re painting the rest of the texture from hand you’re better off painting it using reference, but if you’re using images for the rest of the texture, then its best to use an image and manipulate it to look right.
Just my opinion.
