Here’s a wip shot of my mobile suit, nearly done modelling I think, just needs hands knee pads and some type of shield/sword set-up, then I can sort out a pose and start working on the photoshop side of it.

I'd love to hear any thoughts on the design so far :) I have a sneaking suspicion people think I'm nuts for not doing "realistic" type of thing :P

edit, on the off chance anyone is wondering, the pilot sits in the abs, there is a cockpit there but, I forgot to enable transparency so the window is blacked out

TMunro - I like the detail of you robot. What about rendering style you shown here, I like contrasted lines, but don’t thing it is the best way to express Syd’s style, also you will loose a lot of detail in you image. Feel free to ignore, or maybe your developed rendering would look a bit different from the head view I am seeing here :wink: Full view robot looks great, maybe I would add some more geometry on kneels (I know you already was going to do that as well as arms :wink:
turbinea - I will keep your advice about color in my mind. I guess, at the end I will composit everything in PhotoShop, and then, if there will be something wrong, I’ll adjust my textures according to lightning. I like your new picture, maybe some more depth would be better, but not sure. Contrast sharp lines look great.
JBrant - I really love your vehicle design, I suggest you to add more detail and don’t get into very accurate detailing (I see on the bottom) before you are done with everything else, because latter there might be no way back :slight_smile:
MikeDee - nice picture, like color combination and suit of the driver :wink:
bolt - your bike is looking much better, three lights near front wheel look amazing.

As for my own vehicle, I was working on environment for some time, not quite satisfied with a look at the moment (thinking what may be wrong with composition), now making more buildings and thinking what can be made better here. I will make color correction, post effects and “Syd’s style” at the end, this is just a simple render with mountains on background (from terragen).[/font]


the view I showed of the robot is just a wip of the model, the final presentation will be like one of syd’s gundam model sheets (click here to see the kind of thing I’m aiming for) his upper legs look rubbish at the moment, I’m redoing the armour shapes and still need to add knees like you said. I love what you’ve done so far with your racer, my first thought was your textures might be a little busy but, seeing it now with more scenery, the textures totally fit, yours is shaping up to be one of the top entries IMO. Can’t wait to see more

Hi all, heres a quick update showing how the base unit and flyer look seperately and how they look togeteher as a single vehicle for transit to launch site. the bg is just a place holder but desert style landscape is where I want to go with the enviroment. Let em know your thoughts,

I have to agree that this contest in the Style of syd mead lacks that syds style that is instantly recognizable in all of Syd images. But I don´t think it´s a bad idea to come with something very unique with your own style, Syd have said. “for me, the idea behind the piece is more important that the tool that was used to create it”. So for me, some of the concepts shown here are very very powerful.

I´m a traditional artist, :arteest: and after a deep braingstorming, I´d go with traditional medium for my project, because I think I´ll replicate in the end Mr. Mead style accurately. And BTW I cannot use any 3D program at all :wip:

This is my idea so far:

All of the information below is not science fiction. Every mechanism or component described here is actually, a reality. I just borrowed it.

Equal to Metro is the abbreviation for metropolitan. Cosmo is the abbreviation for cosmopolitan, which is the meaning for “world citizen”.

Cosmo 22M is an earth scale metro train that, in this recent times of instant information, fast transportation of people and stuff from one point to another around the globe is a critical feature for our modern society.

The Cosmo 22M is designed around the most populated north hemisphere of the globe, his 19,000 miles of global engineering on the main track system, has costed almost the entire circulating money on earth, and his cost cannot be precisely estimated. But nobody really cares about money anymore, because is more important to do things, that to have things.

This train had 3 fixed stations around the globe, and because the acceleration and brake times, there is only one full stop in each continent that are placed in triangular formation, due planetary structural advantages:

USA. San Francisco
Europe. Barcelona
Asia. Tokyo.

The passengers can arrive to the main stations by a reduced version of the Cosmo 22M, that go from major cities to one of the main terminals. The estimated time from city A to B anywhere on earth is 1 hour at most. Each one of the Cosmo 22M can carry 1000 people at full, and there are always a train ready to go at the station, because they leave constantly.

Each stop longs 5 minutes. And in that time, the system interexchange passengers. The system scans people with a sophisticated pathfinder A.I, and arrange the users into the Cosmo by personal preferences, like colors, foods, style. In the stop also, the system exchanges the used PFC, for a fresh new one. The used one go to the recycling and purification system.

Early work on the station. The “Ring” Station was discarded early, deciding to go with the more organic triangular shape.

The estimated velocity of this thing is theoretical 99,9% of lighspeed because it have a Cationic Plasmic Fusion Pocket Size Reactor, that have a exhaust velocity of lightspeed. So the acceleration of the system is theoretically infinite, of course, when you deal with people, the accelerations can´t be infinite, thats why in the main system are so little stops, only to get more passengers and more deploy capsules if needed. The top speed when operating nominal is match 22 (17.000 mph), after 2.760miles of acceleration. Just to start to brake again for 2.760 miles more. The system is running 24 hours a day, due time zones.

Accurate Global distances and measures for time & speed predictions.

The train uses the generated plasma and electricity in his primary reactor to became a very sophisticated maglev, that minimizes frictions to zero on the track. And on stations, the train is pretty much “shot” when starts the voyage, by a giant gauss canon that runs well over 160miles along the tracks. At that point the ionization starts to occur at front due speed, and the Train become self-powered at cost zero.

Because the stations, the line is electrically assisted by many of the fusion powerplants around the globe. To start the train over again, is not enough with the energy recovered by the braking system. So it needs the help of external sources, but around the globe has many of this plants, every single of them inter-connected, just-in-case-scenario. So electrical shortage is no more an issue.

When operating, the train is self-powered. The angulated fronts of the train, are made to produce 2 effects, a supercavitational effect first. The air itself can be managed as a fluid, this is no secret. So the thin layer that forms around the train when supercavitation occurs, reduces the air friction about 1000 times, almost to pure vacuum, and when the surrounding air on the tunnel, hits the sockwave of the hypersonic speed that forms at front, ionizes itself, tuning into positive ions, or cations, proving the energy that the embedded reactor needs to operate. Cameras shown that at the shockwave front, cherenkov radiation is emitted. So that feature was decided to be shown in the logo.

At tests, the train had circunvalated the entire earth once per minute at stabilized speed, operating at match 100, thats 310 miles / s. But at operational level the top speed it´s not so high, just match 22. The centrifugal force is calculated to contrarrest the gravity force when operating nominal, so inside the train, there is no gravity at all because it happens the same phenomenon as when you are inside the ISS space station. In fact, the train circunvalates the earth upside down. Gently turning when approaches to the next station. So it´s a rapid pleasant voyage. But it´s advised to take some cautions to avoid nausea that may will happen to some individuals.

Some may argue that the accelerational forces will crush any possible passenger on the wall, fear not. The entire train is a pressured vessel on the inside, all the compartiments, will fill with a rich oxygenated Perfluorocarbon synthetic solution, with a very very high surface tension, that allows the passengers to support well over 1000Gs extreme accelerations without noticing, because the liquids cannot be compressed in any way. And as the solution is a perfluorocarbonate, it can be breathed as normal air. AND when your voyage is completed, due the high surface tension, you leave the train completely dry, because the liquid is not “wet” as we know it. So it´s safe to bring your fancy electronic devices with you, because it will work “underwater”.

Very early concept sketches

Of course having your lungs filled with liquid, cannot let you to speak, so people are asked to carry a direct neural interfaces, that directly wire his conversational thoughts into a speaker system that allows to “hear” what others are thinking about, but maybe you´ll end hear japanese anyway.

Advanced reflecting laminated electroceramics, are used to compose the outside of the machine, due the high temperatures and frictions that will sustain during travels, much like the space shuttle does when re-entering on earth. Combined specialized manufacturing with carbon nanotubes, in exotic quantum chemistry processes, converts this train and their related structures in a virtually indestructible machines. Thats why the final structure of the train shines, due this little layer of carbon nanotubes meted on to the ceramics.

More refined sketches with a fancy profile on top, that will be refined to final later.

All the communications of the train, to the outside, are done by opto-electronic. The train is wireless on the inside, and all along the line, a thin line of lasers, communicate in realtime with the entire train line, so everyone in the trains have access to a common 0 lag, 40Gb I/O standard broadband. Wich is rather slow for this kind of technology, but this is a train, not a supercomputer. So 40Gb/s is more enough for a estimated 100,000,000 users each day. Or the current entire earth population every 2 and half months.

I’ve notice that almost of the entries in this contest are ground vehicles. I think that the goal of this contest is “in style of Syd Mead”. What is “style”? Maybe the vehicles must contain some Mead inspiration. Or, the “atmosphere” of our scenes must be similar to the Mead’s illustrations…

Hi All. I saw Syd talk in Sydney recently. What a legend. Have decided to take a deep breath and create an image which aspires to Syd’s holistic approach. How does the machine work? What’s the environment? What’s the mood? … etc. I decided to set the piece in the blade runner universe. The ability to transmit power via magnetic frequency to vehicles allows them to be much lighter. The single man spinner (FG) and the civilian car behind it both have laser propulsion. The civilian car has wind turbines to augment control while the spinner has smart wheels. You can see one of the power transmitters on the hill bending it’s solar cells towards the setting sun. A detective stands over the body of a replecant who wanted to spend his dying seconds on the mountain summit. He never made it.

Here is my prelim, I still have a lot to do but please give me any crits you guys may have. I only just started on lighting, so far I have just blocked in some color and a few shadows. I'm slowly adding detail work and had alot of fun on the signs.  Good luck to you all and crits are very welcome.

The vehicle works from newly developed mix of antigravity technology for vertical take-offs and landings and a modified tesla turbine that uses compressed air to propel forward by pushing air through the forward and side mounted pylons.

OKAY! Bought My tablet yesterday. And I am Painting in full force now. stayed up till morning painting away on so many things. But im holding off on posting the really special one im creating. So these are just the real random ones i did for fun

Kept the Face blank for the particular reason of mystery. Its a bit tad sketchy and out of the loop. proportions are off. but HEY, just a quick sketch. learned a little bit from it.

This one is going no where. Not comfortable with it, and im really not good at drawing Eccentrically like wheels. I wish open Canvas 1 had a round thing maker. Like Ms paint has. So I can make round cercles. Amazing i cant even spell circles right this morning


@RyanWalsh, Image 1 looks a little too starwars crossed with the matrix, image 2, you know I’m a sucker for mobile suits, I like what you’ve started. Image4 I think if you sort out a few of the angles on the trailer and give it some “meady” pane lines, you’ll have a very Mead circa 80’s style thing going, its easily your strongest concept of the four. What type of tablet did you get? I recently upgraded to an intuos4. I love it. :beer:

@ TMunro _…thx , the front part is the tricky one because it has to have more that “Syd Mead Feeiling” and at the same time it has to much the design terms i have in my mind, meaning i am going for a retro but supertech motorcycle the way that now we have in production the Yamaha Vmax 2009 or the Suzuki BKing …difficult i think. :wip:
