Should try also to add a mattpainting in the background, just to feel that this is not a set but a part of a big city. Need to feel there is something behind your scene.
[WIP] Street in a victorian London
Looks like this project is progressing nicely, im guessing that you still have quite a lot left to do with this. But as has been said, it would be nice to see a background image/matte painting to make it feel less like a stage set, and the fog that you are gonna add will definetly make it look a lot better. If i were you i would try and focus on the buildings and background first and probably bring in the characters as one of the last things, maybe make horse carriage to would be a nice addition but later.
Hoping to see more soon ! ![]()
sure thing, I plan to do mattepainting, but thats another subject to be added in photoshop, now Im still in the 3d stage
but I have an overall idea already
thank you very much for kind words!
yea, as you say - there is still really lot work to be done, and Im progressing slower than I originally planned but since its a private project there is no actual deadline.
@characters and carriage - they are already done, you can see them if you check few posts back. I just hid them for now to speed the render up. Also, to tell the truth, characters were never my “cup of tea”, what I really want to do is environments, but they always will be empty and lifeless without the presence of some characters, so I spent like one month only with designing, modelling and simulating the characters you see here, even my girlfriend helped me with the vintage fashion to match this historical era at least a bit.
@mattepainting - I like to make it as the last stage, because once I will have rendered the entire 3D scene I will be more able to figure out what to paint on the background, though I already have a specific idea (with BigBen dominating the background
I already have a basic concept in photoshop
I think you can make a more interesting sky, now it’s too uniform. The door is too dark, and also you might add something to the pavement. Maybe pools of water, some props. Right now the scene is too dark, you you could add more accents, and increase the moonlight a bit.
@Sky: the sky you see now is just a skydome, in a final image I will replace it in photoshop. I use 2 skydomes - one for GI and this one - for reflections.
@Image Brightness: you might be right, but also it depends on the screen on you are looking at it. Whats yours if may I ask? Im making it on my laptop and imo brightnes seems just right on it. But I think laptops doesnt display the colors correctly by default. It would be best if someone with graphics monitor could tell…
@Pavement: Here Im not sure with those pools of water, because there are already some, Im not sure if it needs even more… I will take a look at it
@Props: Yep, it needs some, that might be true
I mean the sky adds nothing right now to the picture. It’s just a grey area. Sky could add much to the composition, having gradient, clouds and so on.
It’s not about the brightness, but more about not enough accent lighting in some areas. Some areas look too dark and not defined by light. More fill light is also possible. I use dell, if it makes sense.
Looking nice so far. Maybe it would be nice to have more contrast between the blue moonlight and the yellow lights. Also some atmosphere like light fog maybe?
Great work and progress. I would agree though that the overall picture is too dark and would maybe profit form a bit more moonlight. Just an idea: Maybe the moon could be slightly larger and above the archway for more focus on the ‘thief’ and emphasising those silhouettes.
Looks nice, maybe I would suggest adding more modeling details to building to the right, it would make good impression that other buildings are that detailed as well also some close up trash on the street
Thanks guy for all your replies!
I appreciate it a lot
As I said before, things like fog and mist will be added in postproduction in PS, for now I aim for a “clean” render
I had exactly same idea at the beginning, but when I did some quick test it didnt turn out that well. For first, moonlight at position like that seems quite unrealistic. I placed it to the top left to correspond with a mattepainting I will add to that later.
Actually I dont know what kind of details you mean. I already spent too much time modelling and UVmapping these, all other details can be added with textures (honestly, i.e. modelling brickwall brick by brick would be nonsense if I can create it by displacement map etc). And about the trash on the street - I agree on this one. I will add some props. By the way, je to super stretnut tu na fore slovaka!
Hi guys, so here is the latest progress:

I brightened it up just a bit, I dont wanna overdo the effect (but maybe there is still room for some brightness)
Also added some leaves, bottles, pieces of food, flying newspaper, wanted poster - so much for props I will add some more later probably
adjusted road and pavement reflections
I think you need a little more contrast between the brightest parts of the scene, and the darkest. Don’t be afraid to crank values a little during this stage; I think the colours you’ve got work well, they just need to be pushed more. Make the yellows brighter and deepen the darkest shadows, while retaining as much detail as you can in the mid tones. You may want to introduce some additional light sources like street lamps (I think they had them in Victorian times?) so that there will be even more highlighting of edges and details in the scene. Speaking of which, adding more smaller objects would help to bring some life to the scene too, as the current sparse look makes it feel more like a constructed set than a street in a living city.
Remember also that in night scenes, the sky should always be quite a lot brighter than the ground. I think you could brighten your current sky quite a bit!
Another thing that’d be good is to make the glass in your windows dirty and uneven, and also make the road surface more uneven. Even in modern day London, you’d be hard pressed to find such a flat street!
I think it is still too dark I did one artwork in similar color scheme and darkness, maybe you can inspire a bit by lighting or color http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/draw/c9dfba021b997a0438395515a2c6154c
also make sure to light well those characters, add them fake rim light (guys at Blur do this a lot)
then add some high frequency detail to border between sky and rooftops, it will really help to make scene look more detailed
Texture on the ground looks really good to me
Hi, here is the update no#32464947
I did some adjustments, like:
- dirt on the tavern windows
- increased brightness of some lights (GI skydome/tavern interior lights, and few others)
- slightly adjusted pavement reflections
- brightened up the sky (its skydome for reflections purposes only, in the final image I will paint entire new sky)

Fake rim lights sound good! But, it will be as well as many other things (i.e. mattepainting) better to be added in postproduction, but its a really good tip, dikes!
I plan to make roof look wet and dirty, which might add a lot of realism to the scene, along with some smoke popping out of the chimney and stuff
I did, hope this one looks better. Anyway, only important about the sky right now is its impact on reflections, cuz its just a skydome. I will create something better in Photoshop during the postproduction! WIndows are kinda uneven already, I added the dirt now

Hi folks!
After longer break Im back here with another update to my scene!
- another 3 buildings textured
- downscaled the characters a bit, 'cause I realized they are too large
I know the scene might need some more props but Im going out of my list - there are leafs, bottles, broken bottle, pieces of apples, flying newspapers and a rat near the homeless… any ideas ?

here is the latest update after some time… buildings textured, just some small adjustments left to do.
now bring character textures back and add more props
