WIP - Night Falls

#1

Hi guys,

Back again for some more C&C. This is a practice piece. I’m just trying to get better and build a descent portfolio. Any and all C&C is welcome. be as harsh as you need to be… it’s the only way to learn.

This was my first atttempt…

This is an update after some very helpful input…

This is the final version… for now.

And for a comparison as to how much progress I’ve made. the following image is the first attempt I made when I first started looking into matte painting and was the basis for the new image.

hey, right now the night version looks better than the daylight one, but still it looks flat, and the lack of mood/composition and color is not helping. if it is a simple full moon key light some stronger highlights, even though it is maybe overcast you need more contrast and light on it, some highlights on the water, the composition is dead center, not interesting, the foreground tree is nice, and gives a natural look to it, you need to apply some photography techniques, rim lights, some color, get more reference and do the improvements

keep it up !

thanks, James. Been doing that all day. Pulled up a lot of reference photos and in the process of working on what you said.

Updated…

I posted the update in the first post to make it easier to make a comparison.

This is awesome, I love the colours and the light from the moon,
only thing I dislike about this is the compositing of the top of the waterfall.it just seems wrong, not sure how to fix it

Jack.

thanks, Jaxko.

Are you talking about where the falls kind of hitch up on the left side or the top overall?

Good job, i think you’ve made a clear improvement on this image through the different stages. One suggestion i would make is to add more atmosphere into the matte by way of mist and water vapour/spray kicking up and drifting along the base of the falls and overlapping the foreground shapes a little. This would help tie the various separate shapes in the matte together.

Adding some mist to above the falls might be worth a try as well, as i’m not sure about the sharp transition from falls to the background hill, you’d usually get a bit of haze for something so far away.
good luck with it

I dont think its the hitching up on the left that makes it like that, maybe adding a small spray of the edge to blend it in slightly may make it look better. good luck with it,

Jack.

Thanks, guys. gonna do some more work on it later in the day.

I did add some mist and such in the areas suggested but I pulled back because it started to look wrong. I really don’t know how to do this. I’ve been searching for a good tutorial but came up short. I was using a cloud brush and blurring it a little. Not sure if I’m on the right track but I’ll keep kicking at it, lol.

Well, this is gonna be it on this piece for now. I’m posting the update in the original (first post) for easy comparison. I’ve been looking at this piece for a couple of weeks now and I’m kind of had enough, lol. It was a great learning experience and I’d like to use what I learned on a fresh image. I may come back to this later as I have a few ideas, such as moving the left side Cliff a little further back to open up the water way a little. Anyway, thanks for everyone’s help.

Oh, and thanks to whover fixed my sig, lol.

Looking better and better vENTANA.

The edge of the waterfall looks wrong to me. The left side is higher that the right side. Due to the low standpoint and that the perspective, the left side would be lower than the right.
Try it, and see if you like it.

LOL, forgot to post the update in the original post. It’s there now.
