Ok so I tried my hand at matte painting a year ago and failed miserably because of my lack of fundamentals. So this is the perfect place to get some crit and unfail my failure!
Just a quick extension of the plate and playing with shape and space a bit. No real design language or finalised comp or anything useful really just playing with a comp. Not sure if I’ll run with it or more likely have to do a few of these to get a decent idea going.

When you try your hardest, you shouldn’t consider it as a failure but rather a stepping stone to improvement. Your sketch shows creativity but unfortunately the brief asks, and the plate suggests, two opposing sides facing each other. I wouldn’t blow away half the plate like that without showing any supplementary structures on the other side, or even without having another side at all!?! If possible, try and stick closer to the plate and it’ll guide you through the process. Use given boundaries to your advantage and it’ll be more fun.
