WIP - Keira

#1

Kiera Keira Keeyairar however the heck you spell her name, here is a wip ive started, to teach myself to model texture, rig, …well, you get the idea. My second head model (first was crap) so im excited by the progress so far. Eventually i hope to end up with a “beautiful” image, the kind of thing you might see in expose. C&C desperately welcome

Thanks!

UPDATE:

most recent render

#2

The modeling looks decent, but it’s really kind of hard to tell with just the face, once you get more of the head, then people will be better able to judge the work. Also, with the way it is set up in the persp view like that, it’s kind of hard to tell what is accurate and what isn’t. so when you get more of the head shape in there, people will be better able to judge.

#3

If you want to create a good mode, make sure to use a three quarter photo on a grid, and adjust your camera to it. It will make your model ten times more accurate then using just orthographic references.

#4

Also from what I can tell the eye shape is off, but the lips look good, keep goin

#5

thanks for that JBoskma - i’ll keep that in mind

#6

ok, small update. Finished the basic shape of her head. Tbh, i feel like there is something wrong with it, probably the back area, maybe the jaw, but i cant work it out - c&c’s very much appreciated.

Thanks

#7

How would you do that kind of set up?

#8

I need to see some wires to know what problems you’re having.

#9

Hi, nice start on the model you got there. Can’t see the reseamblance yet but i’m sure you’ll get it right.

One thing i noticed is that you made her nose too thin.

#10

Ok, done a few minor updates to facial structure. I also think i am heading in a bad workflow direction lol (I havent even created ears yet!) I whacked a sss shader on there just to see how she’d look, so ive posted it up, but i need to do her ears… which are gonna be a pain. Anyway, here is a wireframe and beauty pass:

#11

small update - ive just finished attaching the ears, and uvmapping her head. im currently painting textures and hope to have some visual update soon. So that you guys arent left without ANY eyecandy, i thought i’d give you this. A bit unorthadox, a bit crap, but interesting none the less  I just projected a photo of keira onto the model and rendered to see how it would come out. But dont worry, my name isnt xcomb… (digitaltutors ppl will get this). Just cos Im such a nice guy

There is still some stuff to improve. The most important one is the nose, it is quite different (http://www.hipposandrhinos.com/newfolder/images/keira.jpg , http://www.palmyria.co.uk/scans/keiraknightley_marieclaire_200510b.jpg, http://www.palmyria.co.uk/scans/scans.htm) . I just googled these. Lips can be wider I guess. Shape of the eyes looks right. The jawline needs some improvement, I can’t explain it well in english, but in your model she has more fat on her jaw than she has.

Anyway, I know I might be nitpicking, but you can take what you agree with and drop what you don’t ;).

#13

thank you for your honesty  I have just noticed the jaw line - you are completely right. It always takes a second opinion for me to see stuff like that (i think everyone has that).

Cheers

hey, i think you´re going off a good start here! as someone said, its hard to see the resemblence yet, but there´s definitely something going on there;i cant quite put my finger on the problem though; i agree on the mouth comment, it should be a little bit wider… sorry for not being of more help, just, keep it up!

#15

thanks again. I have made quite a few changes since last night (which is VERY annoying because now i have to UV her again… argh.) Oh btw, can anyone help me out? The UVs look really good, except for the ears and very front ridge of the nose. My problem is, i cannot just relax these uvs because there is nowhere for them to go to! The nose UVs i can get away with, but the ear looks very bad. Is it possible to uv map the ear seperately? And if i do, how can i get textures to join up? I dont know if this is a question that can be answered with a simple reply but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ben

Hey there! Nice model!
as for the UV`s i would recomend You to use Pelt maping. It is very usefull tool, you can “cut” the head in a separate parts and map them without any problems.
I did it like this :

  1. cut the head in half (side view - from ear to ear)
  2. cut the ears around the base

this way you will get three planes :

  1. front of the head (with nose eyes etc.)
  2. back of the head
  3. ears

heres the pelt maper for Maya with a short tut how to use it. http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/mel_scripts/texturing/3860.html

Keep up the good work!

ok… i followed that link to the pelting plugin… didnt work very well for me, but i searched pelting on highend3d, got THIS pelting plugin [http://sunitparekh.com/pelting/] and wow… i am speechless! Although it seriously makes my uv look like a ghoul - check this out:

(That is simply keira’s face mapped onto my uv… creepy huh?)

Anyway, amazing tool, thank you VERY much for pointing it out to me

Im off texturing (and i got my wacom tablet today w00t! intuos 3)

Ok here you go you CG-hungry monkeys

Ive done the maps for her colour attributes, but not yet done spec or bump. The spec and bump you see are just very quick edits of the color maps (just so i could whack out a few renders that would look half decent to stick on this thread). C&Cs welcome once again!

… am glad i could help
