I am also working on a horse. Maybe the pics can help you out here and there - http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3954580
WIP: Horse (Unicorn) modelling
the area above the eye could use some work, the ridge you have to the upper right of the eye is very well defined, but the rest of the eyebrow is not. Theres also another ridge that comes from the forehead to the eyebrow which you have not defined at all. Overall edgeflow looks good for deformation; there are a few 5-pointers, but i think you have them isolated to areas that do not deform much, so they should be fine.
I know you’re working hard on the mane and I know you’re not totally satisfied with it. There are tons of photos of horses which show their manes. But perhaps, additionally, you should go see the real thing. Any horses near you? Go and stroke your fingers through their manes, and look at ones with tangled manes as well as recently brushed manes. Just a suggestion.
Hey Bryan!
Yep!! The mane is killing me. It’s quite dificult to get a good result, that can be animated. Or, at least, posed. I am trying to do more research. And actualy my wife used to ride and we are trying to find some place around here.
I am also starting build the rig now. Nothing to perminent. I am doing it also, so I can test the geometry. Here’s a test:

I was going to make him eat grass, but his mouth is not rigged and he still has no teeth… hehehe
I think it’s the most time I worked on a 3d model in my life… Hey, but I am learning a lot and having tons of fun!!
