WIP - Cracked Pot

#1

This is my first modelling project. I used Wings3D for the modelling, Photoshop for the texturing, and Yafray for the rendering.

A closeup.

That’s doing something wierd on the bottom though.

Any comments and critiques are VERY welcome! In fact, I would like some!

Awesome work man!

I love the lighting, it gives the whole…Niceness to the scene!

May i suggest you add more? Like mayber a shelf, with spices. To make it look like the kitchen! :bounce:

Great work!

You should make some reading on smoothing algorithms, in this case catmull clark to understand the artifact that happens in the bottom. Its a 40+ sided polygon in the bottom that deforms like this. Select your bottom polygon, extrude 0 lenght, scale uniform, now this polygon wont make the contour of the bottom edge of your vase and the odd deformations will be pushed under the vase and no longer visible. Good luck.

Admiral Ra: Thanks! That’s actually a pretty good idea. Maybe a Middle Eastern type of kitchen.

Egyt: Wow, I didn’t understand any of that first half of what you said. What is an algorithm and what’s catmull clark?
I’ll try your suggestions when I get the chance! Thank you for the comments!

you have a large surface of verts that are not connected. therfore it pinches at each point. you could either connect vert by vert until you have all 4 sided faces, or you could choose the bottom face, change to edge mode and make edges hard (might not be desired effect). or you could do an inset on that face and scale radial y or normal. essentially you are going to have the same effect if you do the last method but it will be scaled down and out of visibility under the pot. if you plan on animating or making the bottom visible for some reason, i would suggest connecting the verts to make 4 sided faces:hmm:

Thought i could explain it simple like this,
Here is your bottom of the vase, when smoothing, all faces no matter how many sides they have, they will be made into quads (four sided polygons), and this is what happens, notice the ouline of the bottom now (marked in red):

This is what you could do to move that bad deformations away from the bottom edge so it wont be noticable:

Of course you could make it all quads and so on and mess with that, but this was just to explain why it happened, have fun.

Wow, thanks for the comments and helps, everyone. I really appreciate them. Well, I fixed the base of the pot. I’m not quite satisfied with the texturing, and I don’t like how Wings unwraps the mesh. I’ve been considering switching to Blender for some time now, but I’m trying to learn the interface. After reading lots of the Blender manual, it appears it has many more capabilities in and of itself than Wings, so that makes me want to switch over. I will also be trying to make my pot texture to look more like it’s clay than wood. One thing that might be difficult is to put in the grain that is formed when a potter forms something on a pottery wheel. I’m experienced in Photohop CS, but I’ve never worked with texturing before so this is totally new for me. Once again, thanks for the help, and if you have any more suggestions, please post them.
I’ll post a render of the pot with the fixed base later.
