WIP Area51

#2

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS! here you have a very early stage image but I can see that maybe the towers and general strectures are kind of simple, I think a more complicated, detailed architecture would obviously give the sense of scale and depth to the image, the main towers are almost dead center in the image maybe you want to play first with composition before starting the final matte painting
watch also the background mountains some of them have different sunlight direction
looking forward to se your WIP and final image keep it up !

ohh thanks very much for your comments and for the welcome

yes the composition of the towers needs to improve

I have tried to relight the mountains for a consistence sun lighting direction
but will go out of the tones range for that image I will do some paint testing however

soon I will put the WIP for this

have a good weekend

Hi here is the WIP more advanced

I have included the towers model to have a better visual aproach I wish to implement in 3D MAYA
still working with elements to include in the platform
still refining the painting on the watter right side
i need to adjust a better integration of the elements

any comments please tell me about it

The eye is very attracted to the brightest and most contrasty elements of the frame, and also by the so-called “rule of thirds.”

As things stand, my eye goes “up, up and away!” out of the upper-left corner of the frame. (More so in the first frame than the second.)

But the shots are generally pleasing, sharp and clear and neutral. Although the “hot” area is perhaps ill-placed (and maybe not… it’s a matter of opinion), it’s by no means overexposed. The tonal range is satisfactory.

The fact that the foreground water in the second image has a sense of current and flow is good. The strong diagonal line leading in the same direction, as formed by the island, is good, as is the fact that the island stops just short of the edge of the frame with a very small bit of “nose room.”

In the second frame, both the island and the rock, and to some extent the wooded hill, all point to a single spot where the airplane has been placed. Good. But the airplane does not hold your eye forever. Good. The action will undoubtedly take place in the foreground along this line. The painted-desert texture of the distant mountains is pleasing.

The composition of the painting is very important in terms of whatever action might be taking place within it, and exactly where (and of what nature) that action is to be. If the painting sweeps the viewer’s eyes away from where the knight in shining armor is saving the damsel in distress, the scene is greatly weakened. And yet, the whole idea is that the effect must be unnoticeable.

“Look at the light.”

thanks sundialsvc4 for all ur comments and observations

this is the almost finished matte I am adjusting lighting

any comments please tell me

I like the 2nd building better personally.
Its a good matte painting.

I think your image will improve a lot if u correct your atmospheric perspective issue.
Eg. Looking at the plane and looking at the rocks in the foreground.
The nearer the element is to the camera, the darker the black will be.
Compare the two element, especially the plane. Since its nearer to the mountain, the dark(shadow) area of the plane should be somewhat close to that black.

Hope it helps,
By the way, you can turn on desaturation to see how the tonal value fares.

Good Job!

good work vmarines.

I think your composition needs a little work, something to lead the eye through the painting, some more detail or more items of interest. The buildings are the key elements but are quite small within the image and placed right in the middle.
To me this feels more like a Dubai-type landscape than Area 51, with which i would associate a more shady, secretive and military type of landscape. It would be interesting to hear the background story behind your idea.

keep it up

Tomas:
thanks for ur comments, yes I will add more detailed elements toimrove the composition, my idea was a scene with a more advenaced kind of construction besides the old fashioned military buildings in Area51,
the lighting needs improve and I am working on that, as u notice this scene has a sunny desert kind of overall lighting, I will work on anscene with an afternoon or more misterious lighting maybe a night scene also could work. also a more dramatic sky in the afternoon-night daytime could work an alien spaceship could be included on the platform

wilonexin:
I am working in the lighting to get more atmospheric proprotions to the scene I mean to avoid to have the image evenly contrast

thanks for the encourage

Hi folks, I still working in this matte to give more interesting view and more rich based on previous interesting comments and to improve it, I want more interesting atmosphere
I have change the mood of the sky and tone of the far mountains

then I will relight the other elements like the platform and add some others to the shoot

what do u think on this sky, does it make sense to u based on this is a Area51 shoot

thanks

#11

I prefer post serial 4# with the curved buildings just something about them that is very attractive to the eye,

This is going to be one of those mattes that is going to be quite iconic, glad to see it in progress,

Rich

#12

Just thought that an alien foot print on the foreground shore could be a great narrative point that the viewer could discover later,

just a thought,

Rich

#13

good job with the new sky and atmosphere. I think they suit an Area 51 matte well.

personally i think the buildings should be futuristic, but also match the architecture of the platform to some respect. Looking forward to see what you come up with.

Tomas:

thanks for your comments and glad u like the atmosphere I think is more suitable for the shoot

Rockhoppermedia: I am designing my own 3D buildings and some others buildings in the platform, since this is going to be a camera map I want to be more precise on the lighting

My intention is a 3d matte and 2d matte for some elements

here is the MAYA ambient oclusion first 3d main towers design what d u think?

thanks…

#15

Wow!
Seems like its moving forward in a good direction.
The Building seems Alien too.(Non-Organic Type)
But i would imagine it to be bigger to fill up more space, or is that just the car park of the whole Alien Mall in Construction??

Are you going to project photos on to the 3d buildings or you are going to texture it?

Wow. Looking forward to see the final piece!! :buttrock:

wilonexin:

thanks for ur comments, for me also is better to have a more big tower as the original sketch…

the plan is to make a photoreal texture building with real images but I need to think in the camera move in maya…

sorry I can not have a big advance on the modeling in these christmas days

i modeled the towers one thinking is going to be used as a landing platform for helicopters or small alien ships

the other has a diferent design, one of the purposes of the big central space on the platform is for landing a big big alien ship that I need to model

but I will end first all the matte and then think to little animation

#17

Hi all, first of all I wish u a happy new year celebration tonight, hoping all ur wishes come true next year…

I have spent time on modeling, since the buildings for the area51 I wish is hard to match with existing photo images and also the perspective, doing by painting everithing from scratch also is kind of complex because the perspective and forms…

so the geometry is modeled in maya, towers where the controls for the aerial ships take place and where differents people works, helicopters and cargo ships are landed over the platform, strange events occurs, there are hangers where also keep unknown things, inside that platforms full of experiments and plans between the goverment and the extraterrestrial intelligence are making progress, this is going to be a futuristic image of the area51 in my original concept…

i am adding 3 image with differents close ups

I am still doing modeling and after I will go back to PSHOP for adding more painting details

tell me any suggestions or comments…

#18

hey man

even though I like the construction you did this time, I think you went a bit backwards. I feel what you were doing at first was much better in the atmosphere and composition. You just needed to fix the camera lens.

well, my opinion. I know at the end it will look good.

#19

Hi Guys, this is an update on the texture phase, I am doing manual texture and photoreal texture in PS, please any comments are welcomed

#20

hey Victor, texturing pahse is looking promising, the amount of detail you need will be huge in order to give the sense of scale , also aerial perspective will play an important role here to give sens of scale and depth/distance, light is kind of inconsisntent now , you will need color bleed in your objects to integrate them and blend them in, also you need more reference , the zeppelin is super mega huge but you maybe need some boats, ships on the ocean to make the scale even more beliavable, right now the towers and the base need more work , and aerial perspective as well
looking forward to see the final image

#21

Jaime, thanks for ur comments

yes, the amount of detailed photo texture and painting will be considerable, but it will worth the time
actually this is a 4500, 2500 resolution mattepainting will be end to half of the resolution for better detail compression
I am stillworking in my free timeto cover the integrations of the elements to the scene as well as u mention to finish painting details
do not know why the images posted are now shrink from its actual size
